Tales from a Child of the Enemy
Duba clearly distinguishes her attitude toward the World War II and its numerous victims when she talks about her hunger with a tone of pain; about Jewish starvation with anger, guilt, and shame; and about German people’s hunger always with cynicism.
Duba mentions starvation many times and in "Guests of Honor," she openly and unlike most Germans says that "people were… / starved" in Auschwitz and all over Germany (105-112).
Duba talks about hunger even when she does not mention it at all; it comes as hunger for truth, knowledge, or justice.

Duba feels shame and outrage at the thought that not only had her country committed such evils, but her own family and schools had kept this information from her.

In these deceptively simple, evocative, and unforgettable narrative poems, Duba tells of a child subjected to non-stop bombings, hunger, and family turmoil and of a girl who grows up hearing nothing of the war save the constant lament of the suffering inflicted on Germany.
Interwoven with these searching tales are the wrenching stories of the Holocaust survivors and their children who were her neighbors when she came to America in 1965 and settled in an Eastern European neighborhood in Brooklyn.
Duba's confrontation with her heritage is unflinching and the stories are impossible to dismiss and hard to forget.

Ursula Duba, born in 1939 to a strict German father in the city of Colonge, Germany, found herself growing-up in the mists of World War II.
During this visit, Duba went on a blind date with a young, Jewish man. The fact the young man was Jewish had no bearing on Duba’s decision to go out with him because until that night she had always thought of Judaism as just another religion, like Protestantism and Catholicism.
Duba's awakening, however, leads her to deny herself the comfort and shelter her parents provided for her all those years, and find out the truth about the war she thought ended years ago.

Space appears as a effect of culture, and culture – being the totality of social practices – structures that space, manifesting itself in laying down limitations in territorialisation procedures: in measuring, separation, counter-positioning, exclusion, identification, classification and designation.

Their appearance explicitly signifies a territory defined by light sources and reflective surfaces, thereby demonstrating the possibilities of positioning a subject either within it or towards it.
