In 1862 the township was enlarged and renamed Rathmines and Rathgar, and in 1899 the Commissioners for the township became an Urban District Council.

Dublin County Council was a local authority for County Dublin in the Republic of Ireland.
It was abolished in 1994, by an Act of the Oireachtas, the Local Government (Dublin) Act,1993, and replaced with three geographical areas, with Fingal to the north, and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown to the eastand South Dublin to the south.
Dublin Corporation was separate from the council and administered Dublin City.

In a planning permission XA 1181 which the hotel had obtained from the county council on 5 December 1983, the exit was shown in the middle of the car park.
Parkes Hotel was not agreeable to this and the county council were not prepared to permit any change in the position without the hotel’s consent in case it could result in their having to pay additional compensation to the hotel.
Under an interim award by an arbitrator the county council had paid compensation to the hotel for the compulsory acquisition of the car park formerly in front of the hotel which had been acquired for the widening of the road.

Early in her career as a Councillor when she was a public representative on Dun Laoghaire borough council Ann Brady recalled receiving a phone call from a builder in connection with a planning application and, in the course that telephone call, the builder referred to 'election expenses'.
Dublin North was a four seat constituency for the first time and there was a view that this presented an opportunity for Fianna Fáil to win a second seat in the constituency.

 Fingal County Archives Division
The archives of Dublin County Council were transferred to Fingal County Archives, which is now located in the former headquarters of Fingal County Libraries.
Fingal County Archives contains a small number of manuscript Minute Books and a more extensive collection of printed Presentment Books for the Period 1818 until the Juries' abolition in 1898 when most of their functions were transferred to the newly established County Councils.
These collections provide a fascinating insight into what life was like for people living in County Dublin over the past few hundred years and charts the development of the County from the point of view of those who lived and worked in it.

In the midst of all this, Dublin County Council members had the power, by casting a vote or proposing a motion, to change a given 10-acre plot from being worth the equivalent of €30,000 as agricultural land to being worth perhaps €30 million as development land.
In the 1980s, Dublin County Council had 78 councillors who gathered at least twice monthly in the county council chamber on O'Connell Street to oversee local authority activity in an area stretching from Swords in the north to Lucan in the west and around the city to Dún Laoghaire in the south east.
Not only did the sheer size render the council unworkable, it also made it possible for a councillor from a south county suburb to influence property development in a north county suburb without fear of any electoral repercussions in his or her local electoral area.

Dublin politicians' claim to power or influence rested on their ability to monopolise and then market their specialist knowledge of state resources and their access to bureaucrats who allocated such resources.
The common image of Dublin as composed of rural workers who have come to the city (bringing rural attitudes with them) is not supported by the available data.
With Dublin's densely populated urban constituencies and geographically mobile voters, the creation of the vast personal networks which would he needed to monitor voters was beyond the resources of most politicians.

The number of members of the Council of the County of Dublin (hereinafter referred to as "the Council") to be elected at the election held next after the date of this Order, and at each succeeding election until the Minister shall otherwise provide, shall be thirty-six.
(3) The number of members of the Council to be elected for each such county electoral area shall be the number set forth in the third column of the Schedule to this Order opposite the name of such county electoral area.
This Order fixes the membership of the Council of the County of Dublin at thirty-six, divides Dublin County into nine county electoral areas for the purpose of the election of members of Dublin County Council and fixes the number of members to be elected for each county electoral area.

 Ireland - Anti bin tax campaign: South Dublin County Council Residents resist Bin Tax
The campaign in South Dublin is at a decisive stage.
To show the lengths that the Council were prepared to go, they wrote to campaign activists citing that certain leaflets and letters were an illegal breach of the High Court injunction and threatening committal proceedings.
The public meetings held throughout the Council area in the week before non-collection was implemented were attended by well over a thousand residents.

South Dublin County Council &endash; rattled by the huge levels of non-payment of the bin tax &endash; has initiated what it describes as a "Pay By Volume Trial" in 5 selected areas across the County.
These have the South Dublin County Council logo on them and householders are asked to use these liners in their wheelie bins.
Before the trial packs of bin liners were even delivered by the council, all households had received a leaflet from the Campaign describing the trial as a con and urging a boycott of it.

The Dublin Corporation state that the wage scale of roadworkers, bin-men and sewerage workers is 195/6 by 1/6 (every 2 years) to 203/- per week and that the normal hours of work are 42½ hours per week for roadworkers and sewerage workers and 44 hours per week for bin-men.

In the Council areas yet to experience non-collection, the lesson from South Dublin is clear - what is needed is the active response of significant numbers of people on the ground to push back the Council immediately.
Dublin City Council have begun to send out letters to all householders requesting them to put "Bin Identification Labels" on their wheelie bins.
The Council are asking residents to put the paper stickers on their bins before 18 March 2004, yet say that the scheme won't start until 2005.

Ms Betancourt was made an Honorary Citizen of South Dublin County in November 2003.
