Dubstar's trademark is well-made lovely melodic pop songs that you just can't resist.
In the past, Dubstar could almost make you choke, simply because they were so bloody nice and soft.
The fusion of her vocals and the heavier background is great and also injects Dubstar with much-needed variation.

Dubstar operated in the same terrain as The Beautiful South and Morrissey--there's a very flat sense of Northern melancholy about them, all high rises and low self-esteem.
Whereas The Beautiful South revel in semi-detached greyness, however, and Morrissey is prone to lyrically provocative gestures, Dubstar match the deadpan restraint of their lyrics with a sparkling techno-indie soundtrack, courtesy of Chris Wilkie's janglepop guitar and programmer Steve Wilkie's layers of synthesizer.
The first Dubstar album is their most poppy, jangly and generally enjoyable.

 Dubstar - Make It Better
Apparently the swansong for the group, Dubstar's 'Make It Better' signalled the demise of a band whose time was clearly up.
In the middle of the 90's there seemed to be an obsession with having 'female-fronted' indie bands where the vocalist didn't have to sing particularly well but looked good in videos whilst the backing players remained in the background; Sleeper and Republica being amongst the most successful exponents of this phenomenon.
In fairness Dubstar had a few decent tunes as back-up but it's been a case of diminishing returns since their bright debut 'Disgraceful'.

45RPM » Sunday Synthpop Brunch: Dubstar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Over the course of five years and three albums, the British synthpop trio Dubstar had managed to accrue a decent (though uneven) measure of success with their beguiling swirl of lush pop styled music and sassy, occasionally jarring romantic lyrical concerns.
The first single from Disgraceful was also the most immediately-striking track on the album: the sublime ballad “Stars,” which highlights Blackwood’s sweetly angelic, layered vocals against a sumptuous, yearning background of string patches and processed breaks.
Spring of 2000 saw the release of Dubstar’s last significant hit single, “I” (that is if you call a one-week flash onto the singles chart at #37 “significant”) followed by the release of their third album best-of collection for Christmas 2004 has been the only release from the trio since.

According to rumour, the band were asked to play at the opening of the designer's new 5th Avenue store during New York Fashion Week.
Ignoring the loathed St Etienne comparison for the moment, it is apparent that the majority of Dubstar's more obvious influences are all quintessentially 'Northern Bands': Soft Cell, The Smiths and New Order.
I mean, we wouldn't be thought of as 'Dubstar, the Northern Band', but living in Newcastle, and most of us being Northerners, perhaps we are.
