Dubstep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.virginia.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Dubstep is a genre of music, its name is derived from the largely South London-based dark 2step sound that originally came out of productions by El-B (as part of both Groove Chronicles with Noodles and then the Ghost camp), Zed Bias (aka Phuturistix, Maddslinky and more) and Steve Gurley in 1999-2000.
Throughout 2003 on Rinse FM and through his sets at Forward>>, DJ Hatcha began pioneering a new direction for dubstep, one that was to finally establish the scene as a distinct and new sound.
In 2006 dubstep producers are increasingly absorbing dub reggae sonic aesthetics - sub bass, reverb and delay - to forge a distinct path away from associate genres like drum and bass, house and breaks.

But thinking about the rhythms outside of a dubstep context quickly brings the subtle rhythmic compositions of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack to mind; Tricky’s fantastic 1995 album Maxinquaye is never too far away either.
The thing that really distances this album from dubstep’s sonic crack is the way Burial takes the mood out of the background and places it front and center.
While El-B and some of the Tempa label roster have done some of the pioneering work of lending dubstep an almost tropically atmospheric sound, Burial has succeeded in casting a unique shadow over the music, so thick that it becomes the predominant force of the album.
