Charles Ferdinand, duc de Berry (January 24, 1778 – February 14, 1820) was the younger son of Charles X of France and Marie-Thérèse de Savoie.
A daughter, Louise, was born in 1819 and later married Charles III of Parma.
The duchess of Berry was compelled to follow Charles X to Holyrood after July 1830, but it was with the resolution of returning speedily and making an attempt to secure the throne for her son.

Jean, Duc de Berry, the third son of Jean II, le Bon, King of France (reigned 1350-1364), was born on November 30, 1340, in the Chateau de Vincennes.
Although the Duc de Berry owned a large part of central France and governed the Languedoc, he was often unable to meet the enormous expenses of his extraordinarily luxurious life.
His master architect Guy de Dammartin and his brother Dreux, André Beauneveu and his disciple Jean de Cambrai, who executed the funerary sculpture on the Duke's tomb, the miniaturist Jacquemart de Hesdin, and the three Limbourg brothers were considered friends and protégés of the Duke.

It is probably the most important illuminated manuscript of the 15th century, "le roi des manuscrits enluminés" ("the king of illuminated manuscripts").
The Très Riches Heures consists of 416 pages, of which about half are full page illustrations that are among the high points of International Gothic painting in spite of their small size.
The royal art lover (and amateur painter) René d'Anjou had an unidentified artist (probably Barthélemy van Eyck) work on the book in the 1440s, and Charles I, Duc de Savoie commissioned Jean Colombe to finish the paintings between 1485 and 1489.

The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry is usually referred to as "le roi des manuscrits enluminés" or "the king of the illuminated manuscripts", but it is also a pinnacle in the entire history of painting.
Commissioned by Jean, Duc de Berry in 1413, it was painted by the Limbourg brothers who left it unfinished at their (and the Duc's) death in 1416.
The Duc Charles I de Savoie commissioned Jean Colombe to complete the painting of the manuscript between 1485-1489.
