  1993-1997 Ducati 916 | Motorbikes
The iconic Ducati 916 was one of the most beautiful designs in the history of motorcycle development.
Design of the Ducati 916 was as much about function as it was about form and the Ducati 916 brought the two together in perfect harmony, the single sided swing arm was stunning however it was actualy designed to make wheel changes faster during races.
In 1998 the Ducati 996 appeared, this bike was almost identical to the 916 but with a larger capacity (996 cc) engine.

Ducati's quality control is getting better but there is still more throttle response to come from careful setting of the squish clearance (the distance between the piston crown at TDC and the head) and the cam timing.
Ducati have always had the capability to have a different mixture in the rear cylinder but it is only very recently that they have started to use it, FIM Ultimap EPROM's have very effective secondary maps for earlier Ducati's.
Recently Ducati have started to map the rear cylinder from the factory but the adjustments are very small and do not seem to take into account the additional turbulence the rear cylinder experiences when the bike is on the move.

The bike is more or less unique as, at the time of writing, Spondon have only supplied three frames to take the big Ducati V twin; the other two are race bikes and are not road legal, and one of those is in France.
The Ducati 888 wheels are suspended at the front by 42mm Marzocchi MR1 forks in 916 yokes, and at the rear by an Ohlins gas shock in Spondon's own swinging arm.
The Ducati was sold on the day I took these photos to finance his next project, a Spondon GSXR1100 in a full race frame with a motor tuned to produce somewhere in the region of 170 b.h.p.

 Howstuffworks "1994 Ducati 916"
After chalking up numerous victories on racetracks around the world, the 1994 Ducati 916 motorcycle set out to make its mark on the street.
While that hardly made the 916 the most powerful bike in its class, a combination of composite materials, compact design, and weight-saving engineering certainly made it one of the lightest; at 438 pounds, the 916 could best be described as svelte.
The 916 broke with Ducati tradition in having its V-twin water cooled, but carried the company's unique desmodromic valvetrain along with four-valve heads and fuel injection.

Why buy a Ducati Motorcycle - Owner's Viewpoints, Opinions
Ducati's have long been a fascination for me and I am looking at a new bike in the coming months.
I am especially interested in the 93-94 Ducati 900CR (named one of the best buys of the year back in '94) probably because of it's $6000 ballpark price and every 900 out there I see seems to have very low miles and many owners seem to extensively modify the bike.
The Ducati 900CR is a great bike, in fact it was the first Ducati I owned since 1994 and I have only deviated from the brand once and that was for a VTR1000.

So after nearly a decade, with the 916 (then known as the 998) still sitting at, or near, the top of the superbike pecking order, and Tamburini having long since left Ducati, Ducati introduces the replacement: the 999.
Engineer Forni explained that due to the lowering of the center of gravity on the 999, and an increase in length of the swingarm (the 999 swingarm is 15mm longer), weight shift due to braking forces is reduced, and the 999 is less likely to lift the rear wheel under heavy braking during a race.
