Sophie Charlotte Augustine was Duchess of Alençon and born Duchess in Bavaria (February 23, 1847–May 4, 1897).
She was a daughter of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria (1808–1888) and Ludovika, Royal Princess of Bavaria.
Sophie died in a fire at a charity bazaar in Paris on 4 May 1897.

Ludwig was born in Munich, the eldest son of Prince Luitpold of Bavaria and of his wife, Archduchess Augusta of Austria (daughter of Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany).
In 1866 Bavaria was allied with the Austrian Empire in the Austro-Prussian War.
On February 20, 1868, in the Church of St. Augustine in Vienna, Ludwig married Maria Theresa.

In 1871 the Orleans princes renewed their professions of allegiance to the senior branch of their house, but they were not consulted when the count of Chambord came to Paris in 1873, and their political differences remained until his death in 1883.
