Literary Encyclopedia: The Duchess of Malfi
Once again, the Duchess retreats from direct engagement with the forces which oppose her happiness: Antonio is sent away from court on a pretext and she feigns a pilgrimage to join him.
The Duchess of Malfi was a successful and popular play through the seventeenth century: the King's Men kept it in their repertory until at least 1630, when it was performed at court before the King, and there were intermittent revivals after the Restoration.
The tragedy focuses as much on the normal, familiar, domestic life the Duchess wants to have as it does on the extremes of power and mental instability that are ranged against her.

Instead of the usual embarrassing masque of madmen gibbering round her, McTeer's Duchess is strapped into a chair, injected with drugs, and forced to watch a hideous Clockwork Orange-like film that mixes her worst memories and most nightmarish fears.
Poised, elegant, full of warmth, humour and humanity, McTeer's Duchess convinces at every stage of her journey - from her comic oieullades as she tries to restrain her impatience when the steward fails to cotton on to her sexual overtures, to the brave irony she displays in grief.
This is a Duchess who, while giving it its due, never allows the poetry to put a decorative glaze on this woman's suffering.

When another well-established authorial Sir—Alan Ayckbourn, two years Stoppard’s junior—opened his own trilogy, Damsels in Distress, at the Duchess Theatre on the West End at the beginning of September, it felt almost like business as usual, coming from a British theatre mainstay who has now written as many plays (63) as he is years old.
Stoppard’s response all along to the book had been not to impede Nadel’s inquiries but not to collaborate with the writer, either: Stoppard the playwright-biographer apparently wasn’t keen to be (if one can coin a word) biographed.
