According to William R. Shepherd's Historical Atlas 1929, Lauenburg was given to Hannover in 1689 and continued in its possession to the Napoleonic era.
When Lauenburg was conquered by the Prussians in 1864, the assembly of noblemen (in German die Ritterschaft) made a decision on 21 October, that they would join in a personal union with Prussia under the condition that Lauenburg was considered a German Duchy (Herzogtum) in itself.
It can be noted, that Lauenburg would have become Prussian already in 1815 (1816?), if Denmark hadn't traded it for the northern part of Hither Pomerania, which Denmark had got in 1814 from Sweden in exchange for Norway.

 Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
The region between Sachsenwald Forest and Lake Schaalsee in Duchy of Lauenburg County is often called a landscape out of a picture-book, with its idyllic, untouched lakes, the ancient villages with their half-timbered and stonework churches and famous manor houses, and the towns like Ratzeburg, Mölln and Lauenburg snuggling into the beautiful countryside.
Here, landscape painters don’t need to add any ornamental flourishes, they can just copy Nature along with what Man has added randomly and artificially, and thus create a picture that is immediately a pleasure to any beholder – those were the words of an English gentleman in the last century.
But there were famous people among the inhabitants of Herzogtum Lauenburg County as well: Ernst Barlach, A. Paul Weber, and Otto Fürst von Bismarck of course.
