Dunn and Young became acquainted at a Booker T. and the MG's show in New York, where Young, not normally known for sitting in with many bands, played a Jimmy Reed number with the MG's.
Dunn, who now resides in Florida, recently concluded the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young reunion tour, and was asked by Young to accompany the seminal group on VH-1.
Dunn was just one of several musicians summoned to California to cut 8 of the 10 tracks for Silver and Gold.

DONALD V. As a member of Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Famers Booker T. and The MGs, Donald "Duck" Dunn was house bass player at the legendary Soul/R'n'B label, Stax, where his meaty playing helped define one of the most distinctive and enduring sounds in popular music.
Among the timeless recordings Dunn held down the bottom end of, are Respect, Dock Of The Bay and I've Been Loving You Too Long, by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett's In The Midnight Hour, and Hold On I'm Coming by Sam and Dave, not to mention sessions with Neil Young, Eric Clapton and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Born in Memphis in late November, 1941, Dunn was given his nickname by his father as the two watched a Donald Duck cartoon on TV.

The members were Steve Cropper on guitar, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, Jerry Lee "Smoochy" Smith on keyboards, Don Nix on baritone sax, Charles "Packy" Axton on tenor sax, trumpet player Wayne Jackson, and drummer Terry Johnson.
Steve Cropper and Donald Dunn were recruited to work with the Blues Brothers, who were played by Stax/Volt fans John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in the late 70's and early 80's.
In 1962 Cropper and Dunn left the lineup to co-found the famed Booker T. and the MG's.

Some of these transcriptions are rather lengthy so that the reader may more fully understands Duck's style, since he rarely repeats himself as he plays through an arrangement.
Also, tempo markings are approximate, at best, due to the fact these records were made to feel good, not to be metronomically correct.

Born in Memphis, Nix attended Messick High School with Donald "Duck" Dunn and Steve Cropper of the famed Stax house band Booker T. & the MG's.
After graduation, Nix spent a short stint in the Army before returning to Memphis, where he joined Dunn and Cropper, along with Wayne Jackson, Packy Axton, Terry Johnson and Jerry Lee "Smoochie" Smith, as a saxophonist in the Mar-Keys.
The group scored a smash hit with the instrumental "Last Night" on the Satelite label (later Stax/Volt), and Nix went on the road with the group, while a house band from Memphis attempted to recorded follow up hits under the Mar-Keys' name.

As The M.G.'s goes from song to song, it is clear that it is an enjoyable effort, due to a large part of the skills of producers Jackson and Dunn.
This well-recorded album gave Dunn and Jackson a chance to work again, and since they were the one of the best rhythm sections of the '60s and '70s, it makes The M.G.'s worth looking into, despite the absent members.
