The family seat of the prominent and wealthy Holte family was at Duddeston Hall.
There is a time honoured story that, while at Duddeston Manor, Sir Thomas Holte had boasted to his companions that his cook always served meals promptly and laid a wager on it.
However, unfortunately for the cook, on that particular day he was not so punctual and Sir Thomas, angry no doubt at the thought of being made to look a fool before his friends, went into the kitchen and hit the poor man over the head with a cleaver.

Life of Francis Galton by Karl Pearson Vol 1 : image 104
He appears to have remained there after James' bankruptcy and his return to Birmingham, for the latter then wentt to live at Bingley House, which afterwards passed into the hands of the Lloyds: The Galton-Farmer house bore the initials J. in monogram over the doorway, and this fine old house, scarcely recognisable, still exists.
In 1782 Galton rented Duddeston', he took a 99 years' lease of it in 1789 and his grandson purchased the freehold in 1820.
Thus in Francis Galton's childhood from 1822 to 1832 Duddeston was the much frequented home of the grandfather ; it was superintended by a highly respected Quaker housekeeper, Lizzie Forster, after the death of Lucy (Barclay) Galton in 1817.

 Local History
The first detailed map, Tomlinson's of 1758, shows enclosure to be then complete in Duddeston and Nechells except for a ten-acre common, Nechells Green, and two much smaller ones at Upper and Lower Gorsty Green, (Gosta Green and A. Row).
All else is a pattern of small quadrilateral closes bordered by hedges: neither from their shape nor their Georgian names is it possible to deduce that certain areas were once in strip cultivation as open fields.
A tradition of depopulation in Duddeston may be based on the number of taxpayers shown thereat in two consecutive returns whereas in 1327 there were more such in Duddeston than in Aston Manor (13 against 9), only five years later there were but two in Duddeston while Aston had 11.

 Aston History
There were low bridges over Witton and Aston Lanes and Lichfield Road, canal and brook: therefrom the great curve of the rails swept down through Nechells and Duddeston to a temporary halt at Vauxhall, thence to Curzon Street terminus in the Rea valley.
Astonians wishing to travel on the new-fangled trains to Liverpool or London had to make their way to Curzon Street: from 1842 they could go to Derby and the north-east from Lawley Street terminus.
This road stretched from Lichfield road to Six Ways at one end Victoria road police station which used to be the Aston Manor law courts, Victoria Playhouse, the swimming baths were they used to use for treating people with impetigo, which was a chemical bath of a white solution.

One of the highlights of my new daily commute is passing through Duddeston Station.
Duddeston has been a strange station for the longest time.
I haven't caught the train on that branch line or any for many years, but even back then Duddeston was pretty much a ghost station, all of the yards empty, rusting good stock in them, and only one out of every five or so branch line trains stopping there.

Once the band started getting attention from record companies, Freddie Waite thought it wise to find a lead singer that was just as old as the boys were.

In 1982 they signed to MCA Records and their first single Pass The Dutchie was an instant smash.

 Duddeston Station
Originally opened as Vauxhall Station in 1837, Duddeston Station has a far from insignificant place in the history of Birmingham's railways.
When the permanent terminus opened at Curzon Street in 1839, Vauxhall became a goods-only station until it was rebuilt and opened in 1869 under the LNWR, who had absorbed the GJR in 1846.
This station was once a considerable railway concern and yet today it is reduced to a single platform, overgrown ruin.
