Dudley has a history dating back to medieval times; a castle has stood in Dudley since the 8th century, the present castle dates from the 13th century, and provided the centre around which the town grew.
In 1966, the county borough was expanded to include the urban district councils of Brierley Hill, Sedgley and Coseley.
Dudley's borough boundaries were further expanded in 1974 to become a metropolitan borough, having taken in the boroughs of Halesowen and Stourbridge (both in Worcestershire).

Dudley North solely in Dudley Metropolitan Borough, it bares some resemblance to the old Dudley East, but the addition of some of the more Conservative wards from Dudley West have transformed what was Labour's safe seat in the borough into a much more marginal proposition.
Inner Dudley itself (Castle and Priory, St James's and St Thomas's) are Labour safe wards with the LibDems not making their presence felt except in St Thomas's where Gerry Lewis, the perennial LibDem candidate for the old Dudley West stands and is occasionally elected to the council.
Inner Dudley contains a large ethnic minority for Dudley Borough and this is sadly reflected by constantly good performance by extreme right wing candidates in local elections.However, these wards are much smaller due to urban decline and have lower turnouts than the other four.
