Dudley Senanayake was a "Leader"to the very letter of the word, and his name - a "Leader of multitudes" In addition he was an honest, democratic, respectable humanist and a fervent patriot par excellence.
Dudley Senanayake was born on June 19, 1911, had his early education at St. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, where he excelled in studies and sports and won the gold medal for the best all-round student.
Dudley Senanayake was a man whom office did not corrupt and who did not cling to office if he believed the time was ripe to quit.

Don Stephen Senanayake (October 20 1884–22 March 1952) was an independence activist who formed the Sri Lankan United National Party, which demanded independence from Britain.
His son, Dudley Shelton Senanayake (1911–1973), succeeded him as Prime Minister in 1952, followed by another relative, Sir John Kotelawala (1897–1980) in 1953, but this nine-year family dynasty was ended by a landslide victory for Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike in 1956.

Dudley had to give in to pressure from his Parliamentary colleagues, Ministers of Cabinet, his mother, brother Robert and staunch supporters such as J.R. Jayewardene and ultimately he accepted the premiership.
Dudley yielded to the demands of friends, colleagues and advisors and called for the resignation of Kotelawala who was touring the US at the time.
Dudley had to face the Marxist-sponsored Hartal in August 1953 where a few persons were shot dead including a civilian at Kirulapone who was travelling in a vehicle that failed to stop on Army orders.

The trio D. Senanayake took office as the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Ministers of which the Chairman was the British Governor, when Sir Don Baron Jayatilleke took office as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in New Delhi in December 1942.
Senanayake had to return as a disappointed and a disgruntled person, as it was not accepted by the Secretary, and he continued his struggle for independence.

Abeywickrema has appointed Professor Gamini Keerawella, Professor of Political Science of the Peradeniya University as a Director of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited with effect from April 08, 2005, according to a media release by the Government Information Department.
Dudley Shelton Senanayake will be held on April 13 at 9.30 a.m.
The ceremony has been organised by the Dudley Senanayake Commemoration Association.

By then, Senanayake hoped, Ceylon's voters would be less susceptible to an overwrought widow's overworked tears, return the U.N.P. with a workable majority.

An economic crisis, caused by increasing unemployment, the rising cost of living, an acute shortage of consumer goods, and the failure of state enterprise in industry and trade, made people look back to the UNP.
Senanayake's government enjoyed a five-year term of office, during which it encouraged private enterprise and made an effort to extend agricultural productivity.
These measures, while having moderate success, also tended to create inflation and to increase social inequality.
