Dudley has a history dating back to medieval times; a castle has stood in Dudley since the 8th century, the present castle dates from the 13th century, and provided the centre around which the town grew.
Dudley was mostly made up of farms and factories surrounded by the occasional cottage until the 19th century, when many rows of terraced houses with terrible sanitation were built.
Dudley was further expanded in 1974 to become a metropolitan borough, having taken in the metropolitan boroughs of Halesowen and Stourbridge (both in Worcestershire).

But the rather neglected grave of Drummer Dudley Stagpoole, a member of the 57th Foot, later the 1st Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own), will be restored to its former glory thanks to the Barnet War Memorials Initiative.
Born in 1838, Drummer Stagpoole lived to the age of 73 and is believed to have spent his last days in Finchley.
Drummer Stagpoole is believed to have been married four times, the last time at the age of 61 to a woman 36 years his junior.

Dudley Stagpoole (VC, DCM) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 2 October 1863 at Pontoko, New Zealand, Drummer Stagpoole volunteered to go with an ensign (John Thornton Down) to rescue a wounded comrade from the rebel natives.
They succeeded in bringing in this wounded man who was lying about 50 yards from the bush, although the enemy kept up a very heavy fire at short range and from fallen logs close at hand.

Details of the life of war hero Drummer Dudley Stagpoole were emerging this week - and it appears he was a keen drinker and something of a ladies' man.
Born in 1839 in Killunan, County Galway, Drummer Stagpoole, a member of the 1st Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, died at the age of 73, after retiring to a workhouse in Ware, Hertfordshire.
His neglected grave at Hendon Park Cemetery in Holders Hill Road is to be restored by the BWMI to a quality befitting a soldier who was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) and Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) after rescuing two wounded comrades from rebel natives in New Zealand, during the Maori War on October 2, 1863.

Drummer Stagpoole was born at Killunan, County Galway, Ireland, in 1838 and was approximately 25 years old, and a Drummer in the 57th Regiment (later The Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own)), British Army, during the Waikato-Hauhau Maori War, New Zealand, when the action for which he was awarded The Victoria Cross took place.
Drummer Stagpoole was also awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for separate actions on the same day.
He is the only member of the British Armed Forces to ever earn both awards on the same day.

Ath their colonel’s call for volunteers to bring the man into shelter, ensign down and drummer stagpoole (V.C.) promptly responded, and succeeded in carrying in the wounded man, though a heavy fire was directed upon them by the enemy.
His name (together with those of his fellow-officers in the regiment who fell during those years) is recorded in St. Paul’s Cathedral on a brass tablet.
