DudleyMall - Dudley Castle - Brief History
The Suttons took on Dudley as an additional surname, and as it was common for those who worked for the local lord to use his name for themselves, the spread of Dudley as a surname commences from this period.
John Dudley (another member of the family who was keen to have the castle himself) connived to assist his downfall and had succeeded by the 1530s.
While the town of Dudley may not have staunchly espoused one side or the other, the new Earl had given King Charles I considerable support and the castle itself was held by royalists.

Yampy Gornal Dudley Black Country West Midlands History - Was a road tunnel the answer to Gornal traffic problems?
Four years later, in July 1985, an ambitious and imaginative solution was tabled; a "super tunnel" literally underneath Gornal (yes, we know it sounds like another Yampy April Fool!).
Immediately, a well organised anti-tunnel campaign began amongst the Gornal population, and pressure was applied to the Labour opposition group to fight the controlling Tories, in a finely balanced Council chamber.
But we can't help wondering whether some of the same people who fought against the tunnel in 1985 are now complaining about the volume of traffic through Gornal.
