Dudu also had a darker angry side that occasionally took over and could even be a little off-putting to strangers, although friends knew it was only a role he was acting out.
Dudu's room which we used for rehearsals was covered from floor to ceiling with pictures, photos and album covers of his favourite musician's including of course members of his own band, Zila - a kind of monstrous mishmash montage!.
Dudu gave every musician that came through his band the opportunity to be himself and every musician, with maybe one or two exceptions, really did love to work with Dudu.

Four of the five cuts feature, in addition to Pukwana, two of the musicians from the prior date, drummer Louis Moholo and the glorious trumpeter Mongezi Feza, who was to die prematurely shortly after this session.
The closer, as befits its title, is a boppish affair, the formerly funky rhythm team settling with surprising ease into a hardcore jazz groove, giving Pukwana a chance to strut his Bird-roots on alto.
Diamond Express may be something of a mixed bag and may never quite reach the ecstatic extremes of In the Townships, but overall it's a fine date and a good chance to hear what this late, great musician was capable of.

Leader and alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana and trumpeter Mongezi Feza were twin fountainheads of this movement and are in rare form here, both instrumentally and as composers.
Pukwana's alto has an altogether human quality, by turns heart-rending and exultant, while Feza (one of the greatest trumpeters that virtually no one has heard) has a silvery, irrepressibly witty aspect to his work that sneaks up and kills when least expected.
Anchored by the incendiary rhythm team of Harry Miller and Louis Moholo, this is a band that just doesn't stop, going from one pounding, dancing song to the next, never pausing for breath, as though playing nonstop during a 72-hour township festival.

Probably the best-known of these expatriates was saxophonist Dudu Pukwana (1938-1990), featured on ANTWERP 1988 and celebrated with “Do Do That Dudu That You Do” on LIVE AT THE PLOUGH STOCKWELL.
Ironically with such heavy hitters as Parker, Pukwana and Stevens (1940-1994) on board, the Antwerp CD appears to be a unique all-star date, with the two CD-set merely the approximation of a typical two-set Saturday night pub gig.
One was never exactly sure how much of Pukwana’s mature style came with him from South Africa and how much grew organically from the confluence with advanced Free Jazz stylists in the United Kingdom.

The front line is nine horns strong, and includes (as do all the concerts here) core members Dudu Pukwana (alto) and Mongezi Feza (trumpet), abetted by regulars Harry Beckett and Marc Charig (trumpets), Nick Evans (trombone), with Alan Skidmore and Gary Windo (tenors).
All the sonic hallmarks are present: there's the sweet Ellingtonian sophistication, Monk and 52nd Street, the joyous brassiness and unpredictability (that always reminds me of the Art Ensemble of Chicago), the wayward solo jaunts, and the layer upon layer of deep riff and rhythm.
The highlight of the concert is Mongezi Feza's wildly scrawled and wonderfully close-mic'd statement at the beginning of Dudu Pukwana's "The Bride".

Called "One of the truly legendary modern jazz big bands." by The Penguin Guide To Jazz On CD, Travelling Somewhere adds to the band's still growing legacy, and will bring their music to a new generation of fans.

They do a fine job pushing the band along, but one can't help but desire an earthier, more natural-sounding rhythm section; the electric piano, for instance, sounds a bit out of place.
This makes for the most adventurous outing of the set, one that combines spirited free playing with a lovely, dirge-like theme and is representative of the sort of music played at the time when the South African expatriates and British avant-jazzers joined forces.
