Savant Review: Duel in the Sun Roadshow Edition
Duel in the Sun is mogul David O. Selznick's attempt to duplicate the success of his Gone With the Wind in the Western genre, a grandiose entertainment intended to do for his wife Jennifer Jones what Scarlett O'Hara did for Vivien Leigh.
Duel in the Sun's plot and structure is proof that Selznick learned all the wrong lessons from his fevered micromanagement of GWTW.
By the time of Duel in the Sun, Selznick's former right-hand-man Val Lewton was a producer in his own right.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Duel in the Sun
When Duel in the Sun premiered in 1946, Gregory Peck was just embarking on what would be a storied film career, mostly populated by the solemn, earnest characters he so capably personified with his noble screen presence and velvet baritone.
Watching him as bad-boy Lewt is one of Duel's chief pleasures — despite being cast against type, he plays the scoundrel with a natural charm, all swagger and grin and twirling pistols, and he even displays his skill at horsemanship by riding alongside a stampede at full gallop and wrestling with an unbroken stallion.
MGM's DVD release of Duel in the Sun features a solid transfer (1.33:1 OAR) from a source-print that is very good, although some purists will note the occasional flutter in the three-strip process, in addition to a couple of moments where a second or two of film has been lost.

Duel in the Sun benefits from this forbidden passion, as we see Jones and Peck sweating a lot, screaming at each other, hitting each other, and just generally being cruel to one another.
Duel in the Sun was directed by King Vidor, a much more talented and personal director than Victor Fleming was on Gone With the Wind.
And Duel in the Sun has such amazing Technicolor photography that it should be seen on a big screen or on a properly mastered DVD.

Duel in the Sun (1946) was branded "Lust in the Dust" at the time of its release.
This classic epic western was produced by David O. Selznick (who failed in his desire to make it the Western equivalent of his earlier Civil War epic Gone with the Wind).

Accordingly, he micromanaged the making of Duel in the Sun (Lust in the Dust to some), an extravagant Technicolor epic about the collision of the old West with the new, wide-open spaces with railroads and barbed wire, and hot-blooded outlaws with civilized folk, often wimpy or unwell.
Appropriately nicknamed "Lust in the Dust," Duel in the Sun is a wacky, grandiose melodrama, famous for its sexual innuendo.
Buttressed by a fiery backdrop about the colliding sensibilities of old West morality and the true Northern ambitions to tame it, "Duel In The Sun" ultimately became an overblown melodrama that seemed almost a garish lampoon of "Gone With The Wind" rather than its successor.

And Duel in the Sun, from former Golf Illustrated editor Michael Corcoran, is a perfect golf time machine.
Nicklaus won three more majors after that, but as Corcoran reasons, Watson's win at Turnberry on the southwest coast of Scotland foreshadowed an era of balance in the golf world that eventually was shattered by Woods.
Corcoran not only recognizes one of golf's greatest battles — the "duel in the sun" of the book's title — but places this showdown in the annals of golf history.

King Vidor, the one director who survived the ordeal without being fired, relishes putting on a great spectacle for his esteemed producer.
But despite the tragedies and the overflow of human emotion, the characterization is sketchy, and for all its splendour Duel In The Sun remains a curiously uninvolving movie.
But even if it can't hold a candle to Gone With The Wind, the duel which provides a climactic finale to all this turmoil is a joy to behold.

While the Center for Individual Freedom generally frowns upon illegal activity, it may well be that a duel -- not unknown to the Founders and possessed of both honor and decisiveness -- would leave the public interest and the separation of powers in better shape.

The final shootout (not a classic 'walkdown' duel) between Pearl and Lewt is an odd one.
Mulvey suggests that it hints at some interdependence between hero and villain, but, for me, there was also some hint of collusion between two outsiders left celebrating the wildness of their lives one last time (another Western plot, of course).

Beautifully filmed, overheated, uneven, and in many ways troubling, Duel In The Sun may be little talked about outside of discussions of Martin Scorsese (it's the first film he ever saw), but it's well worth seeing.
Boasting a "cast of 2,500," it's a grand spectacle, and as an example of how much psychological complexity could be squeezed into the seemingly simple formulas of the studio system, few surpass it.
