Ordeals were a means of obtaining evidence by trials, through which, by the direct interposition of God, the guilt or innocence of an accused person was firmly established, in the event that the truth could not be proved by ordinary means.
Ordeals were resorted to when the contesting parties were unable to bring forward further evidence, for according to the ancient German law, the production of evidence was not arranged for by the court itself, but was left to the contestants.

 Duel
The duel is, therefore, undoubtedly of heathen origin, and was so firmly rooted in the customs of the Gauls and Germans that it persisted among them even after their conversion.
Whoever killed his opponent in a duel was to be punished with death; severe penalties were also enacted against the sending of a challenge and the acceptance of the same.
The duel implies that the honour of the challenger has already been injured, and consequently that this injury is an accomplished fact; besides, the duel takes place according to agreement, so that it is not a case of self-defence against sudden attack.

Holmgang (or holmganga) was a duel practiced by Norsemen.
The duel was fought either on a pre-specified plot or on a traditional place which was regularly used for this purpose.
Although holmgang surely is one of the forerunners of duel ordeals of the Middle Ages, Norsemen did not seem to think that victory represented divine favor, just the winner's superiority in combat.

Duels and the act of dueling is something that has characterized not only the imagination of historians and modern warfare enthusiasts, but also the minds of writers and readers of literature for years.
Judicial duels, on the other hand, were official acts, during which both parties (the plaintiff and the defendant) fought their grievances out on the battle field with swords in front of a judge.
As Frevert states, "Duels were duels of honor in which the participants engaged for the purpose of demonstrating their sense of honor rather than for the purpose of achieving a definite result.

The treatment of the vanquished in such a duel, especially one in defense of high principles, or of gentle womanhood, was generally brutal and ruthless.
To decline to accept a challenge for a chivalrous duel was to be branded a coward, and to be considered beneath contempt as a man. It was from this example that the Duel of Honor was born.
As dueling became more and more popular, vast treatises were published to regulate every circumstance of the duel, from the cause of the quarrel through the challenge and choice of weapons, to the fight itself.

If the ordeals had been confined to questions like this, the laity would have had little or no objection to them; but when they were introduced as decisive in all the disputes that might arise between man and man, the opposition of all those whose prime virtue was personal bravery, was necessarily excited.
Duels were not rare in the other countries of Europe at the same period; but in France they were so frequent, that historians, in speaking of that age, designate it as "l'epoque de la fureur des duels." The Parliament of Paris endeavoured, as far as in its power lay, to discourage the practice.
Scores of duels (many of them fatal) have been fought from disputes at cards, or a place at a theatre, while hundreds of challenges, given and accepted over-night, in a fit of drunkenness, have been fought out the next morning to the death of one or both of the antagonists.

The ordeal reverses the correct principle that a man must be held to be innocent until he is proved to be guilty, and throws the burden of proof upon the accused instead of the accuser.
The customary ordeals in the middle ages were water-ordeals and fire-ordeals; the former were deemed plebeian, the latter (as well as the duel), patrician.
The mediaeval church, with her strong belief in the miraculous, could not and did not generally oppose the ordeal, but she baptized it and made it a powerful means to enforce her authority over the ignorant and superstitious people she had to deal with.

Duel began life as a TV movie in the US, before playing theatrically in Europe where it was matted to a standard 1.85:1 theatrical ratio.
Duel highlights his talent for making the most of a more restrictive space, and he often uses it to convey how trapped his lead is, filling the screen with his worried, nervously-sweating face, or shooting up towards the truck, making it look even more imposing as it covers the frame and blocks out the light.
Duel is a film that transcended the boundaries of both the genre and the medium it was designed for and became a huge influence on a generation, with modern productions such as Jeepers Creepers and Roadkill still borrowing heavily from a film made before most of its leads had been born.
