It is very hot and dry in the summer and bitterly cold in the winter, with a huge diurnal temperature variation of up to 20°C in the summer, when daytime temperatures easily reach 30-40°C. Frosts are common as late as May and as early as October.
The River Duero can moderate this, but the vineyards tend to be planted away from the richest soils of the alluvial plain, as vines prefer poorer soils.
Sardón del Duero is not an officially recognised DO, so the wines are sold as Vino de la tierra: this may change, as the expansive Vega Sicilia have apparently also started up an operation in Sardón, and are looking to have the area elevated to DO status.
