The street marks the rough outline of the original shoreline of Lake Ontario, since filled in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The street begins at the foot of the Bayview Extension in the east and ends at Bathurst Street in the west.
Recent plans to extended Front Street to Dufferin Street have been opposed by residents and businesses in Liberty Village and south Parkdale who fear their neighbourhoods will be permanently disrupted by the proposed extension, which would serve commuter access to the Gardiner Expressway.

 History
The names of Parkdale’s streets themselves commemorate the solid citizens of the area: Jameson, an Attorney General of Upper Canada (Jameson’s wife, Anna, who joined him from England, was to write a series of letters back to England which became a Canadian classic book on the times entitled "Letters form Upper Canada".
The neighbourhood of Parkdale is bounded by Bloor Street West to the north, the C.N. and C.P. railway lines and Dufferin Street to the east, Lake Ontario to the south, and Roncesvalles Avenue to the west.
South of Queen Street) were much sought after by the wealthy British class of Toronto, wishing to escape the city — it’s factories, high property taxes, and poor drinking and swimming water.

Transit Toronto - Content: What if the Queen Subway was built instead of the Bloor-Danforth?
Streetcars disappeared from King Street, with Broadview continuing the route's eastern legacy and a new "Roncesvalles" route operating between Sunnyside station and Runnymede Loop on the west.
Dufferin cars were cut back as well, but continued to operate between Dufferin station and the Exhibition (usually with one car, except during the Exhibition).
The new Dufferin bus was extended south to this station in the mid 1960s, and it soon operated at a higher frequency than its lowly streetcar counterpart.

 COMMISSION REPORT MACRO
After the Dufferin Street/Hydro Corridor option was identified as the preferred routing, a thorough comparison was made of the two potential design options for Allen Road-Dufferin Street: i) bus-only lanes in the middle of the road, or “centre-median” design, and ii) a design with bus-only lanes in the curb lane, shared with right-turning motorists.
This design for Allen Road-Dufferin Street would have bus-only lanes in the curb in the northbound direction and, in the southbound direction, would have some sections with the bus-only lane in the curb, and others with the bus-only lane in the middle of the road.
At Keele Street, on the north side of the hydro corridor, there is a signalized intersection, with Murray Ross Boulevard on the west, and a driveway to the Shell “tank farm” on the east.

Review of Overnight Services for service on Lawrence Avenue West was that the 329 Dufferin overnight route be revised to operate west from Dufferin Street on Lawrence Avenue to Weston Road, instead of the present service east from Dufferin Street on Lawrence Avenue to Yonge Street.
The 329 Dufferin overnight route would be changed to operate north on Dufferin Street to Wilson Avenue, over the same routing as the daytime 29 Dufferin route, and this change would provide new overnight service on Dufferin Street between Lawrence Avenue and Wilson Avenue.
Customers who now travel from Dufferin Street, south of Lawrence Avenue, to Lawrence Avenue, east of Dufferin Street would have to transfer between the 329 Dufferin route and the new Lawrence Avenue West overnight route.

Dupont Street in Toronto at the close of the twentieth century is an open graveyard of such industries, most of which collapsed without so much as a pauper’s funeral.
Much later, Toronto’s streets would literally receive their names from Dupont, from another plant where the street signs—fl letters on white—that today mark street names at city intersections were fabricated.
Mussolini would have brought a street map, for until the late nineteen-forties, when the city’s streets were widened and many jogs eliminated to facilitate auto traffic, Dupont Street was not a single east-west corridor.
