Welcome to Duffield Derbyshire in the Heart of England.
Duffield was one of the Royal Manors sold by Charles I. Part of the manor came into the possession of Thomas Newton, who is believed to have built the present hall in the 1620's.
The Derbyshire Building Society acquired Duffield hall in 1973 and after major renovation and the building of a new office block, the hall was officially opened in 1978 as its headquarters.
Duffield these days is situated 5 miles north of Derby, on the A6 trunk road, just south of the famous Peak District National Park.

The original castle was built by one of the early earls of Chester circa 1100 and was rebuilt in the 13th century by Ranulph de Blundeville, Earl of Chester.
The castle was much neglected in the 18th century, but after 1783 extensive alterations were made which included the removal of the bay windows, tall chimneys and characteristic gable-roofed attic storeys and refacing of the exterior of the entire south wing.
From the Ferrers, the castle passed by marriage to the Shirleys of Chartley in 1688; again by marriage to the Comptons, earls of Northampton in 1715 and to the Townshends of Raynham in 1751.

The castle itself was probably founded soon after the Norman occupation of Ceredigion in the reign of Henry I (1100-35), and it is possible that the keep was built soon afterwards on terra firma, as has been proved at Skenfrith and suggested at Clifford and Bronllys.
When Faulkes Breaut gained the castle in 1215/6 he proceeded to strengthen it with 'towers and outer defences' and 'towers and walls and outer walls from the stones of the churches, and surround it on all sides with deep moats of pavement'.
To avoid this stale repetition is one of the main purposes of my series of booklets on castles and their tenurial histories - to show what is left both historically and architecturally and then to attempt to combine the two to formulate a reasoned hypothesis of a castle's development using available evidence, rather than speculation.

Duffield Castle does not appear in the record because it was built somewhat later by Henry de Ferrers in the 12th century - and was razed by Henry III about 1266 after Robert de Ferrers had joined with the rebellion of Simon de Montfort.
