Dufftown was a planned town, established in 1817, though its story as a settlement can be traced to at least the 700s, when Mortlach Church, one of the earliest religious sites in Scotland, was founded.
It lies on the A939 south west of Dufftown, at a height of 345m, and is popular with visitors to the nearby Lecht ski resort.
East from Dufftown is the town of Huntly, an attractive place of grey stone laid out in a grid pattern.

Dufftown or Balvenie as it was initially named is a small town in the Moray parish of Mortlach, 17 miles south of Elgin.
Dufftown is laid out in the form of a crooked-armed cross with the towns Clock Tower which is an important attribute of the town being built in the 1830's originally the town jail, later becoming the borough chambers, it has now become a Tourist Information Centre.
Dufftown today is an ideal location for fisherman to use the world famous salmon fisheries of Speyside and the rivers Dullan and Fiddich.

Headquarters and western terminus of the Railway, Dufftown Station is located less than a mile from the town centre towards Elgin on the A941.
Perhaps the most famous of Dufftown's exports is the Glenfiddich which is the only Highland Single Malt to be distilled, matured and bottled on one site.

It was secured from Booth's scrapyard in Rotherham for the Railway by members of The AC Locomotive Group, and moved to Dufftown on 14th June 2001.

The route offers mainly easy walking on low ground (a mixture of seashore, river valley, old railway and moorland) and is clearly waymarked throughout with the national LDR logo - a thistle in a hexagon.
