  Handbook of Texas Online:
In addition to providing shelter with few manufactured materials, the dugout was made tolerably comfortable in both summer and winter by the temperature of the ground.
On the plains, the dugout consisted of a rectangular pit, five to seven feet deep, eight or ten feet wide, and of variable length.
Representative of the partial dugout is the building known as the Matador Half Dugout, a shelter with an excavation into the side of a hill lined with sandstone slabs, upper walls of cottonwood logs, and a framed roof covered with shingles; it originally was located south of Matador.

Ch. 5: Shelter, the Greatest Need - Nuclear War Survival Skills
Shelters can be built to give excellent protection against all nuclear weapon effects, except in places within or very close to cratered areas.
But most shelters would be of little use in areas of heavy fallout unless supplied with enough life-support equipment to enable occupants to stay in the shelters until conditions outside become endurable.
Persons preparing to go to public shelters should be aware that many lack forced ventilation and that the blowers and fans of most forced ventilation systems would be stopped by loss of electric power due to electromagnetic pulse effects or by other effects of nuclear explosions on electrical systems.

The tale of Dugout — a reference to his father's career as a baseball player, as well as to a shelter where his mother was born — starts well before Allen's 1943 birth in Wichita, Kan. But it winds through his childhood in Lubbock, a time and place that continues to feed his art.

 Dugout Shelter
This is my favorite shelter, as it is relatively quick to build (provided you find the right terrain and materials handy), and provides a warm and dry place to live.
It is scalable, meaning that, in a pinch, you can build one just big enough for yourself, and you can also build it big enough to shelter a small family, depending on how much work you want to do.
If you are building for permanence (a hunting shelter you want to return to), then build it strong with plenty of earth to cover it.

Historic properties in a community are tangible links with the nation's past that help provide a sense of identity and stability.
The National Register, which recognizes the values of properties as diverse as a dugout shelter of an Oklahoma pioneer settler, the Breakers Mansion in Newport, and a 12,000-year-old prehistoric site, has helped many to appreciate the richness and variety of their heritage.
Listing a property in the National Register provides recognition of it's historic significance, consideration in planning Federal or federally-assisted projects, eligibility for Federal tax benefits, consideration in decisions about coal-mining permits, and eligibility for Federal preservation grants.
