New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock GA-GH
This album is one of the most innovative albums ever committed to recording media, and the only thing I wonder is why "common" people were able to get into the songs that got heavy radio airplay, particularly "Shock the Monkey" and to a lesser extent "The Rhythm of the Heat" and "San Jacinto".
Already their first album shows that this is a very original band with a level of the complexity of compositions that can be quite compared to the most serious albums of the '70s.
Most of the songs on the album are marked by the constant development of both the instrumental and vocal arrangements, kaleidoscopic changes of tempo, tone, and mood, very complex stop-to-play movements, and the complete absence of even meters.

In Duke's End they have a clever little trick by putting Behind The Lines opening in at the start and the end of the song with the Turn It On Again guitar work in the middle, which ends the Duke album on a high.

Sir Duke by Bill Ware CD
Thus, it's doubly surprising when the pair decide to not only collaborate on a duet album of Duke Ellington tunes, but to honor the Duke's work with some of the most straight-ahead playing in either man's career.
The most striking aspect of the arrangements comes from the strict duo format of the album, which necessitates use of space, subtle dynamics, and a modern kind of minimalism.

Cuts Across the Land, the debut album by The Duke Spirit, comes with no small amount of expectation, particularly after the release of their promising EP "Roll Spirit Roll" way back in 2003.
It’s a raucous rock & roll album, displaying an energy that manages to stay on the good side of shambolic, lending songs like "Lion Rip" and "Love is an Unfamiliar Name" an excitement that’s reminiscent of classic 1960s British groups such as the Rolling Stones and the Faces.
Produced by the legendary Flood, the album sees the band perfect their mix of sixties rock and garage punk sounding something like Patti Smith fronting The Strokes.
