  Duke Pearson Discography
In 1961, while touring with the Byrd-Adams group, Pearson became ill. Filling in for him for the engagement (at the Birdhouse in Chicago) was a young Herbie Hancock, who became his permanent replacement.
Pearson taught at his alma mater, Clark College in 1971 and in 1972 and 1973, he toured as accompanist to Carmen McRae and Joe Williams ("Joe Williams is easier to work with than anybody else I ever worked for.").
Pearson died on August 4, 1980 at Atlanta Veterans Hospital from multiple sclerosis.

Duke Pearson - Biography - AOL Music
Duke Pearson was an accomplished, lyrical, and logical, if rather cautious, pianist who played a big part in shaping the Blue Note label's hard bop direction in the 1960s as a producer.
Pearson was introduced to brass instruments and the piano as a youth, and his abilities on the latter inspired his uncle, an Ellington admirer, to give him his nickname.
Pearson continued to accompany vocalists in the 1970s, such as Carmen McRae, but he spent a good deal of the latter half of the decade fighting the ravages of multiple sclerosis.

duke pearson - organissimo jazz forums - This is the place to discuss the band, jazz, and more!
Duke Pearson was just a great all-around musician, and I totally agree with the comments about his music exuding a warmth and good humor.
Duke was way ahead of the pack in creating an organic mixture of rock, funk, bossa nova, and other "world" music sounds that still bore his individual stamp (as opposed to sounding like he was just trying to ride trends), and he even had a signature sound on electric piano.
I consider Duke Pearson to be one of the exponents of the lyrical piano school in jazz, in the line of Teddy Wilson, Hank Jones and John Lewis, he had a beautiful touch.

This recording, led by Duke Pearson on piano, featured the unusual mix of trumpet (Freddie Hubbard), trombone (Willie Wilson), and baritone saxophone (Pepper Adams).
Pearson was a sensitive and disciplined pianist whose style was considered somewhat logical and a bit cautious.
In the liner notes, Pearson stated that he did not like to play ridiculous up-tempo songs "...because I believe that then most of what you have to say goes by before you have a chance to think about it." This gives you an idea regarding the pace of the music.

Duke Pearson : Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Duke Pearson had always displayed a flair for arranging, even on small combo albums, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that he would attempt his own big band record.
What is a surprise is how successful Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band actually is. Pearson leads 13 other musicians through a selection of nine songs, including four originals, two contemporary jazz tunes by Chick Corea and Joe Sample, and three standards.
While it might not appeal to fans of Pearson's wonderful small-group hard bop sessions, it is unquestionably an experiment that works, and one that confirms his remarkable skills and talents.

The late Duke Pearson was a master of large combo arrangements, working with octets, nonets and even larger ensembles during his career.
There are certainly notable solos, particularly by Coles, Spann and Pearson himself, but it's the commitment of the nine voices to a single purpose that makes this recording memorable.
Pearson suffered from multiple sclerosis in the latter years of his career and died in 1980 at the far too young age of 48.

Duke Pearson was nicknamed by an uncle who admired Duke Ellington's music.
During this period he formed a big band, initially led also by Byrd; as the Duke Pearson Band (1967-70), it rivaled the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, which also shared some of the same personnel.
In 1971 Pearson taught at Clark College, and the following year re-formed his band with virtually the same musicians as before.

Despite its all-star lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor sax, James Spaulding on alto sax and flute, Ron Carter on bass and Mickey Roker on drums, this December 7, 1966 session is a big disappointment.
Basically, Pearson's original compositions are watered-down and mainstream in their construction, and dry and underdeveloped in their delivery.

Hubbard is tantalizing and Pearson is a delight.

sudden thoughts : Sweet Honey Bee   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Because Pearson’s work is nothing if not whole: despite background tensions at the label between experimentation and commercialism (a battle in which Pearson’s position placed him at the front lines), the most notable quality of Sweet Honey Bee is its arranger’s remarkable talent for harmonious congruity.
That impulse is etched in every care-worn furrow of Pearson’s arrangements, the strongest element of Sweet Honey Bee: on the theme of “Sudel,” the pianist balances a sublime ascending phrase against Henderson’s gritty solo phrasing; a brilliant moment of wave-like tensions quietly embracing, passion pacifying aggression, the structure framing the freedom.
Regardless, it is a comforting irony to imagine that such forces would enable the reappearance of such a sympathetic musical balancing act.
