Duke's endowment was valued at $3.8 billion in 2005 making it the sixteenth-largest endowment in the U.S. The university's special academic facilities include an art museum, several language labs, the Duke Forest, a lemur center, a phytotron, a free electron laser, a nuclear magnetic resonance machine, a nuclear lab, and a marine lab.
Duke was ranked 32nd globally and 24th nationally by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2005 in terms of quality of scientific research and number of Nobel Prizes.
Duke requires its students to live on campus for the first three years of undergraduate life, except for a small percentage of second semester juniors who are exempted by a lottery system.

The latest work by the Duke researchers is the first to demonstrate that monkeys can learn to use only visual feedback and brain signals, without resort to any muscle movement, to control a mechanical robot arm -- including both reaching and grasping movements.
Henriquez and the research team's other biomedical engineers from Duke's Pratt School of Engineering are also working to miniaturize the components, to create wireless interfaces and to develop different grippers, wrists and other mechanical components of a neuroprosthetic device.
And in their animal studies, the scientists are proceeding to add an additional source of feedback to the system -- in the form of a small vibrating device placed on the animal's side that will tell the animal about another property of the robot.

DURHAM, N.C. – Patients who undergo surgery late in the afternoon are more likely to experience unexpected adverse events related to their anesthesia than are patients whose operations begin in the morning, a new analysis by Duke University Medical Center researchers suggests.
In the more than 90,000 surgeries analyzed, only a small percentage of the adverse events reported actually caused harm to the patients, the researchers said.
There were over 330 applications in 10 categories from 23 countries across the computing industry, of which Medicine was just one category.
