Duke of Argyll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The title Duke of Argyll was created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1701 and in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1892.
The Duke of Argyll is the chief of the Scottish clan of Campbell and in this capacity is known as "MacCailean Mòr", which is Gaelic, for "Son of Colin the Great" referring to Cailean Mór of Lochawe (Colin of Lochow) who was killed in fighting with Alexander, Lord of Lorne in 1296.
Thus, the Duke is one of the only five people to hold two different dukedoms, the others being the Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay, the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, the Duke of Hamilton and Brandon, and the Duke of Richmond, Lennox and Gordon.

Argyll intimated his intention to resign his office rather than take this Test, but, at the instance of James himself, he at length complied; adding, however, the explanation, of which the Duke professed to approve, that he took it so far as it was consistent with itself and with the Protestant religion.

 HHV Ferry: Duke of Lancaster
Built for the traditional overnight Heysham-Belfast service, the Dukes were considerably larger than the ships of the same names that they replaced.
After a period in which it seemed very possible the crossing might be shut altogether, the 'Lancaster' and the 'Argyll' were returned to their builders to have car decks installed onto their main decks.
This conversion was rather more substantial than that carried out on the ships' sister as here the garage was to be accessed via a stern door and space for two coaches was made along the centreline at the stern in a small area with the required headroom.
