With the regent, Robert, duke of Albany, he was suspected of complicity in the murder (March 1402) of David, duke of Rothesay, who was in their custody at Falkland Castle, but both were officially declared guiltless by the parliament.
By the failure of heirs in the elder branches of the family the dukes of Hamilton (q.v.) became heirs-male of the house of Douglas.
The heir-presumptive to the Douglas estates was his sister, Lady Jane Douglas (1698-1753), who in 1746 secretly married Colonel, afterwards Sir, John Steuart of Grandtully, by whom she had twin sons, born in Paris in 1748.

One of the early supporters of William III in Scotland, he held offices under him and Queen Anne, rising to become commissioner to the Scottish Parliament (1700) and a secretary of state for Scotland (1702).
Duped by an intrigue of Baron Lovat, he falsely accused John Murray, 2d marquess and 1st duke of Atholl, of Jacobite activities and for that mistake was dismissed in 1703.
In 1708 he was created duke of Dover (in the English peerage), and in 1709 he was made third secretary of state for Great Britain.

The Most Noble James Douglas, 4th Duke of Hamilton, (1658 – November 15, 1712), eldest son of William Douglas, Duke of Hamilton and of Duchess Anne, succeeded his mother, who resigned the dukedom to him in 1698.
As such, he was an opponent of the Union with England, but his lack of decision rendered his political conduct ineffective.
As an attempt to woo him, additionally he was created Duke of Brandon in the peerage of Great Britain in 1711; and on 15 November in the following year he fought the celebrated duel with Charles Mohun, Lord Mohun, narrated in Thackeray’s Esmond, in which both the principals were killed.

The Duke of Alban was hoping for a peaceful visit with his aunt, who he hasn't seen in 3 years.
Also, because the duke and Kittie never really establish any kind of relationship with each other (at least none that I could see aside from lusting for each other), the book does tend to stagnate a little.

The title Duke of Queensberry was created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1684 along with the subsidiary title Marquess of Dumfriesshire for the 1st Marquess of Queensberry.
The Dukedom was held along with the Marquessate of Queensberry until the death of the 4th Duke (and 5th Marquess), when the Marquessate was inherited by Sir Charles Douglas of Kelhead, 5th Baronet, while the Dukedom was inherited by the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch.
In 1708 the 2nd Duke was created Duke of Dover (along with the subsidiary titles Marquess of Beverley and Baron Ripon) in the Peerage of Great Britain, but these titles became extinct upon the death of the 4th Duke in 1778.
