The title of duke of Chtellerault, granted to his remote ancestor in 1548, and claimed at different times by various branches of the Hamilton family, was conferred on the 11th dukes son, William Alexander, 12th duke of Hamilton (1845-1895), by the emperor of the French in 1864.

The 1st Earl of Selkirk's eldest son James Hamilton (1658-1712) was known as the Earl of Arran until 9 July 1698 when his mother, Anne Hamilton, abdicated her titles of Duchess of Hamilton, Marchioness of Clydesdale, Lady Aven and Innerdale, Countess of Arran and Cambridge, Countess of Lanark and Lady Machansyre and Polmont.
He was created Duke of Brandon and Baron of Dutton in the Peerage of Great Britain on 10 September 1711, and famously killed in duel with Lord Mohun (who also died) in Hyde Park on 15 November 1712.
The 11th Duke's son William Alexander Louis Stephen Douglas-Hamilton (1845-1895) died without a male heir and the title of 13th Duke of Hamilton passed to his distant cousin Alfred Douglas Douglas-Hamilton (1862-1940) who was descended from the 4th Duke of Hamilton.

The Duke of Argyll is also the chief of the Scottish clan of Campbell and in this capacity is known as "MacCailean Mor", which is Gaelic, for "Son of Colin the Great" referring to Cailein Mor of Lochawe (Colin of Lochow) who was killed in fighting with the Lord of Lorne in 1294.
His son, the 2nd Duke, was created Baron Chatham and Earl of Greenwich in 1705 as a reward for his support for the Act of Union and further elevated to the title Duke of Greenwich in 1719.
Thus, the Duke is one of the only five people to hold two different dukedoms, the others being the Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay, the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, the Duke of Hamilton and Brandon, and the Duke of Richmond, Lennox and Gordon.

James, 4th Duke of Hamilton was one of Kneller’s first British patrons, and he not only sat to him but encouraged the rest of his own family to do so, including Anne, 3rd Duchess and William, 3rd Duke.
Because his mother was duchess in her own right, he did not inherit his titles on the death of his father in 1694, but his mother agreed that he should become duke in 1698, so that he could represent the family in the Scottish parliament.
In 1711 he was created Duke of Brandon and Baron Dutton, but was unable to take his seat in the House of Lords because of a legal wrangle as to whether Scottish peers could sit there under English titles.
