Even his brother-in-law, Diogo, the duke of Viseu, was found to have conspired against him and was killed in 1484 by the king's own hand.
These wishes were disputed at the next Council, held in Lisbon in November 1439, for the Queen was a foreigner and a woman and the regency passed to his oldest uncle, Pedro, duke of Coimbra.
