Dukes County: formed in 1695 from Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands, which had been part of Dukes County, New York until Massachusetts gained it in 1691.
In 1679 the county was eliminated when most of the county became part of the colony of New Hampshire and the remainder was added to Essex County.
York County formed in 1652 from unorganized land in the Maine District with the name Yorkshire County.

In 1667, by the treaty of Breda, between England and Holland, the possession of the country was guaranteed to the Duke of York by the States-General.
The former county was thus limited in the act of erection: "To conteyne the towne of Albany, the colony of Rensselaerswyck, Schonectade, and all the villages, neighborhoods, and Christian habitacons on the east of Hudson's river from Roeliffe Jansen's creek, and on the west from the Sawyer's creek to the Saraaghtooga."
The city of Hudson was incorporated April 22, 1785, to include all the territory embraced within the boundaries of Major Abraham's (Stockport) creek on the north, Claverack creek on the east, the north line of the district of the manor of Livingston on the south, and the Hudson river on the west.

 1849 Description of Dukes County
This county is formed of the islands of Martha's Vineyard, Chappequiddick, Elizabeth Islands, and Noman's Land - the latter of which is the southern extremity of' Massachusetts.
In 1644, by an act of the commissioners of the United Colonies of New England, probably at the request of the inhabitants, Martha's Vineyard was annexed to the jurisdiction of Massachusetts.
In 1664, the Duke of York received from his brother, Charles II, a grant of New York, including Long Island, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and the islands adjacent, which had been previously purchased of Henry grandson and heir of William, Earl of Sterling, who previously resigned and assigned them to the duke.

On October 7, 1691, by the Charter of William and Mary, Dukes as well as Cornwall County leave New York and become counties in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
