His father was Algirdas (ruled 1345-1377) or Olgerd, duke of Lithuania, a son of Gediminas.
As Ladislaus II, his reign is noted for the crushing defeat inflicted on the Teutonic Knights in neighbouring Province of Prussia by Polish, Lithuanian, Russian and Tatar forces at the Battle of Grunwald 1410.

The Piast dynasty is a line of Kings and dukes that ruled Poland from its beginnings as an independent state up to 1370.
His name was first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Polish dukes by Gallus Anonymous, written in ca 1113.
Although the early dukes and kings considered themselves Piast's descendants, the term "Piast Dynasty" was invented in the 17th century by the historians, working for a number of rulers who governed their duchies in Silesia.

 The Titles of the King of Poland
In 1295, Premislas II (+1296), Duke of Greater Poland, was crowned King, and, restored the title of King in Poland.
In 1569, during the reign of Sigismund Augustus (+1572), the last King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from the House of Gedimin,  the Poles and Lithuanians concluded pact (Union of Lublin) that united the two countries into a single, federated state, which was to be ruled by a single, jointly selected sovereign.

According to the statute, constitution or last will of the Polish duke Boleslaus III the Wrymouth Poland was divided into the 4-5 hereditary provinces distributed among his sons, and a royal province of Cracow for the eldest to be the high-duke of all Poland.
One of these provinces, Greater Poland was given to the Mieszko III the Old the third oldest son of Boleslaus, and subsequenly divided among his descendants and successors, until they died out in 1296.
After a short period of rule by the dukes from various branches of Piast dynasty and the kings of Bohemia, the province fell to Ladislaus the Short (crowned king 1320) and turned into the Poznan Voivodship and Kalisz Voivodship of the united Kingdom of Poland.

Originally the diocese of Cracow seems to have comprised the towns of Sandomir, Cracow, and Lublin, and the castellanies of Sieradz, Spicimir, Rozpoza, Lenczyc, and Wolborg; but its area underwent various changes.
From the year 1443 to 1795 the bishops of Cracow were at the same time sovereign dukes of Severia, a territory situated between Silesia and Cracow.
Before the first partition of Poland in 1772 the Diocese of Cracow composed the whole of Little Poland, Sieradz, a large portion of Silesia, and part of the present Diocese of Zips (Scepusium).

The heritage was contested by Silesian Prince Henry of Glogow and Prince of Sieradz, Leczyca and Brzesc, Ladislaus [Wladyslaw] the Short, as well as by the Czech King of the Przemyslid Family, Wenceslaus [Waclaw] II.
The latter won control of Little Poland, Great Poland, the Gdansk area of Pomerania and part of Kujawy, and had himself crowned in 1300 as the King of Poland.
In 1318, a general rally at Sulejow sent a petition to the Pope on behalf of the "monastic orders, chapters, eminent personalities, dukes, counts, barons and towns," asking for the crown for Poland.
