Dulce Pontes is a mesmerizing and versatile instrument of fado.
Dulce Pontes, who has been recording for 13 years and scored a hit collaboration with Ennio Morricone in Europe last year, creates intense volume from her vocal chords, scats and improvises as if she studied with Ella Fitzgerald and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and enhances some of her work with odd, almost avant garde movement.
Dulce Pontes was one of the great winners, last night, of the 7.th edition of the Amigo Awards, the prestigious annual distinctions bestowed by the Asociación Fonográfica y Videográfica Española (Spanish Record and Video Producers Association), which congregates over 60 producers from Spain and Latin America.

Dulce Pontes' heartbreaking voice drives and defines her fifth release, O Premiero Canto.
The shadow of the great Amalia Rodrigues obscures much of contemporary fado, but Pontes is coming into her own as she expands the repertoire and adds new element to a beautiful, but inert, tradition.
Pontes' digging into other Portueguese traditions has also come up with gold in "Ai Solidom," "Tirioni," and "E tao grande aletejo." Where she falters is with a tendency toward over-production and several songs that exhibit a new-agey one-world-beat flaccidness.

Pontes is in possession of a remarkably facile gift: a voice which rings true with each gorgeously stunning note.
Dulce's voice is an incredibly beautiful, expressive instrument -- and the arrangements on this outing, using a diverse array of only acoustic instruments drawn from all over the world, offer a perfectly complementary backdrop.
Pontes wrote several of these songs, and had a hand in most of them -- the growth she has experienced over the last few years as both a person and an artist is blindingly apparent here.

Pontes brings a tremendous amount of feeling to these performances, and while comparisons to the great Rodrigues are well-intentioned, O Primeiro Canto leaves no doubt that she is an excellent fado singer in her own right.

Born in Montijo/Portugal in 1969, and after honing her pipes with the Rock band "Os Percapitas" to perform for commercials and musical theaters, Dulce Pontes became instrumental in resurrecting her country's traditional Fado style seen as passé and defunct at the time.
Dulce's Pop-flavored debut album Lusitana [1992] was followed a year later by the double Platinum Lagrimas, one of the best-selling Portuguese albums ever.
It renders her their peer, their matriarch, the one who enjoys the larger artistic perspective that remains true to the spirit of Paredes and Rodrigues while incorporating elements from outside their world, like a vagabond story teller seasons even familiar exploits, in the retelling, with unfamiliar imagery from afar.

Over the past decade, Dulce Pontes has morphed from a pop diva cranking out rock ballads to a mature singer and composer of music that forms a synthesis of folk, classical and contemporary styles.
While she continues to be hailed as the premiere exponent of the Fado style typical of her Portuguese background, O Premeiro Canto delivers solid evidence that there is no style that can thoroughly contain Pontes' talents.
In order to relate her unique blend of sounds and styles, Pontes uses an instrumental montage that draws from a range extending from the Portuguese tradition to Scandinavian bagpipes, Celtic harps, Wayne Shorter's soprano sax and beyond.
