Extended wetlands are associated with the Dulce River delta on the lake's northern coast, known as "Banados del rio Dulce." Along these wetlands, there is a marked gradient in salinity ranging from freshwater at the upper portion of the Dulce River to the highly saline waters at the river mouth.
The lake was formed as the terminus of the Dulce River, that at its southern end runs into a depression lying between two parallel faults, which forms a low plain 130 km long and 115 km wide.
Afterwards, longitudinal faults formed barriers to the advance of rivers and large lake basins were created which covered almost all of the Chaco-Pampean plain, from the height of the Pampean mountain ridges to the Bordo de los Altos.
