The Duluth Missabe and Northern Railway Company (DMandN) was incorporated on February 11, 1891 by the Merritt interests to build a railroad line connecting their iron ore properties located at present-day Mountain Iron and Biwabik, Minnesota and Duluth.
In 2002 the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway was said to be the largest iron ore handling railroad in North America, with 212 miles of track.
Horace Johnson was a president of the Duluth and Iron Range.

 Lake Superior Railroad Museum --
The car is used to house photos pertaining to the Missabe Road and its predecessors, the DandIR and the Duluth, Missabe and Northern.
It was in storage at the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway's Proctor Roundhouse for years until it was brought back to the LSRM in 2003.
It was purchased for the Duluth, Missabe and Northern Railway by the Merritt brothers, the developers of the Mesabi Iron Range.

Donated to the Museum by the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway, this car was restored by members of the Lake Superior Transportation Club.
The car, which may be the last of its kind, was donated to the Museum by the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range and was restored by members of the Lake Superior Transportation Club.

Construction of the railroad from Mountain Iron to Stony Brook Junction on the former Duluth and Winnipeg Railway- a distance of 48 miles -was completed in October of 1892.
The first shipment of iron ore was made late in October of 1892 from Mountain Iron, and moved over the Duluth and Winnipeg Railroad to Lake Superior.

 Railway Museum Quarterly - Last Issue
Railway and transportation museums in general have been welcomed into this large organization’s fold, and in fact many accomplishments of ARM and its member museums are admired by those hailing from other types of museums.
I’ve also noticed that railway-related TV documentaries and art/photography exhibitions seem to be at an all-time high, at least within the U.S. I’m not sure of the exact reasons for this, but there are opportunities to be pursued given this circumstance—although they’ll differ from museum to museum.
As someone with a long-term commitment to the railway preservation movement, Dave was active within ARM’s Parts Committee, and had assisted a number of electric railway museums with parts acquisitions, particularly from Japan.

This is a fully functional model of the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railway, which is abbreviated as DM&IR.
Widely known in railroad circles as the "Missabe", the DM&IR was organized by the United States Steel Company for the purpose of hauling the large quantities of iron ore from the vast Missabe iron range, perhaps the largest man made excavation in the history of the world.
The Missabe train is privately owned as is most of the rolling stock on the otherwise club owned layout.

In the northern woods of Minnesota lies the Mesabi Iron Range, an area rich in taconite iron ore. When this production was filmed in 2001, the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway was busy hauling this ore from processing plants to the rail docks on Lake Superior.
