  Dulwich
Edward Alleyn purchased the manor of Dulwich (the name means the place where the dill grows) in 1606 and since then revenue from the estate has been used for various charitable purposes, including maintaining a school.
In 1901 Dulwich’s population was considerably less than today’s total; an extraordinary fact as the figures for the population of areas that bounded it to its north, east and west were double those of today.
Dulwich provides a perfect example as to how one factor (in this instance an extremely powerful freeholder) can totally dominate, and in this case inhibit, the prevalent process of development even when all other factors that would normally encourage it: demand for housing, suitable employment, transport and willing builders are in place.

Dulwich is, in fact, one of the oldest recorded villages in London.
Dulwich and East Dulwich cover a fertile valley between hills, Denmark Hill and Dog Kennel Hill to the north, Sydenham Hill and One Tree Hill, Honor Oak, to the south.
Dulwich Common is now only the name of a busy main road, part of the South Circular, but, until it was enclosed in 1805, the common was a wide open space; land where sheep and cows could graze.

 Tulse Hill & Dulwich Hockey Club - History
Tulse Hill was founded in 1893, Dulwich Hockey Club in 1905 and Dulwich Women’s Hockey Club in 1979.
Much of the hockey played in the London area during the 1870-90s, when the game took root, was the result of cricket clubs looking for a sporting activity for their members during the winter.
This owed its origins to a match in 1977 between the Villagers and a team of ladies from Dulwich Squash Club organised by Roma English, which was such a success that the ladies decided to try and form a regular team.

When the idea of introducing a CPZ (Controlled Parking Zone) in Dulwich was first mooted in the Herne Hill area several years ago in an attempt to alleviate parking in streets in proximity to Herne Hill Station by commuters, many people, understandably, turned a deaf ear to the implications.
