Dulwich Picture Gallery is an art gallery in Dulwich, London.
It was the world's first purpose-built art gallery (the Foundling Hospital, which contained a permanent art exhibition, being primarily for another purpose) and opened in 1817.
Alms houses alongside the gallery were converted into exhibition space in 1880 and an extension was built in the early 20th century.

In Louisville, the galleries are painted Picture Gallery Red for the exhibition, a jolt for those accustomed to white walls, but these 17th- and 18th-century paintings hold their own against a rich background.
The collection became the Dulwich Picture Gallery through a string of happenstance, certainly unexpected by Stanislaus, King of Poland, when he empowered a pair of ambitious London art dealers in the late 18th century to purchase for him paintings by the most popular and admired artists of the day.
