Dulwich Village lies at the heart of the area, with a street of fine Georgian buildings.
Dulwich College was founded in 1619 by the actor Edward Alleyn; the authors P G Wodehouse and Raymond Chandler were pupils.
The college was originally established in the manor house of Dulwich, but the present building, designed by Charles Barry, was erected between 1866 and 1870.

Following their review of parliamentary representation in South London the Boundary Commission for England has made minor changes to the existing constituency of Orpington.
The seats of Dartford and Chislehurst had both seen their electorate grow enormously since the last review and as an interim measure were divided into four, creating the additional seats of Bexley and Orpington.
The seat has changed a little in subsequent boundary reviews since 1945, most recently at the 1997 general election, when the Ravensbourne seat was divided between the three Bromley constituencies, moving Biggin Hill into the existing Orpington seat.

Today, there is an opportunity for one of the borough's Members of Parliament to raise a matter that has greatly exercised families throughout the borough--secondary education in Southwark.
Of the six secondary schools in my constituency, three are local authority schools, two are Roman Catholic schools and one is a Church of England city technology college.
Throughout my time as a Member of Parliament, all the Church schools have been oversubscribed and the local authority schools have been less popular, whatever the efforts of their staff, whom I commend.
