Bandurists or kobzars were wandering folk bards who originally composed and performed their own lyric-epic historical songs (duma) in the recitative style and later added songs of various other genres (religious and humorous songs, dance melodies) to their repertoires, which were passed on to their students.
The dumas were based on the folk song, modified by the influence of the syllabic poetry produced in the schools of the 16th-17th century.
Peretts described the dumas as 'a harmonious synthesis of cultural-individual creativity with folk creativity.' The dumas were first mentioned by the Polish historian S. Sarnicki, who, in his Annales under the year 1506, mentions that mournful songs - dumas - were composed in honor of two brothers who died during the Wallachian campaign.

Duma, at its best, reminded me exactly why we loved movies as children: because they told stories like this, with images just as rhapsodically colorful and exciting.
Duma is not a masterpiece, but its deficits recede into insignificance once you open yourself to the movie's mystery and visual splendor.

The wonder is that Duma is a real cheetah (or at least one of several used in the filming), never a fluffy CGI effect.
Duma was never released widely on multiplex screens across the country, as the studio ascertained it would not do incredible box office in today's climate of star-studded "hype machine" titles.
Duma is easily one of the best all-ages movie I've seen in a long time, and there's nothing but some scary animal action to garner it a PG rating.

Duma Movie Review - Duma Movie Trailer - The Boston Globe
''Duma" is no different: Ballard gives us nature in all its vast, dangerous glory and then asks us to ponder where ''tame" ends and ''wild" begins, in ourselves and in the animals we think we know.
''Duma" is too suspenseful for the youngest children, but for anyone older than 8 or 9, it evokes nothing less than awe at the harsh beauty of the natural world.
Just as he's preparing to re-introduce Duma to the wild, the father dies of a heart attack (again, discreetly), and mother and son have to move to the city.

The larger reality is that movies like "Duma" have been an endangered species for some time because marketing departments at the major studios simply aren't designed to release small movies.
Ballard said Warners is looking to guarantee ancillary revenues for "Duma," adding that the film is going into L.A. because Warner Bros. needs the movie to play on 100 screens to fulfill an international TV sales agreement.
After that, the "Duma" folks began screening the film for critics across the country, most of whom made remarks in their reviews about Warners burying the project.

Duma, a drama of uncommon beauty and emotional resonance about a South African boy’s journey to return his pet cheetah to its natural habitat, tested dismally at screenings in Sacramento, Phoenix and San Antonio, prompting distributor Warner Bros. to consider shelving the movie.
Depending on whom you talk to, Duma is another casualty either of risk-averse corporate movie marketing or of a crass new generation of young audiences fed and watered on special-effects pizzazz, for whom live wild animals are sissy stuff, and with whom an aging body of film critics is increasingly out of touch.
Set in the high desert of South Africa, the movie, which is based on photographer Carol Cawthra Hopcraft’s memoir of farm life with her young son, is powered by a love of nature at once rhapsodic and unsentimental.
