The Municipality lies at the tail-end of one of the biggest rivers in the Province of Iloilo, the Jalaur River.
Dumangas is composed of 45 barangays, 17 of which are coastal and 39 are farming.
Dumangas has a monsoonal climate, which is divided into two pronounced seasons; dry season from November to April and wet during the rest of the year, with a maximum rain period from June to October.

The project is through the partnership of the Municipality Dumangas and the PAGASA with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center and the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction.

Dumangas, 35 kilometers north of Iloilo City, is one of the areas threatened by the oil slick from the Solar I. To prevent the oil from contaminating their shore and 4,500 hectares of fishponds, townsfolk installed booms made of rice straw, old fish nets and bamboos a mile offshore.
He said that the seafood from Dumangas is safe to eat because near-shore fishing areas were not affected by the oil spill, at least for now.
Other northern Iloilo towns like Concepcion and Ajuy have reported fishery losses due to oil reaching their shores, said Jerry Bionat, secretary of the provincial disaster coordinating council of Iloilo.

Dumangas has best disaster council in RP DUMANGAS town has been chosen as having the best municipal disaster coordinating council (MDCC) among third and fourth class towns in the country.
Located 43 kilometers north of Iloilo City, Dumangas, which is located in a natural flood plain, is prone to flooding during heavy rains that often bring heavy losses to its rice paddies and fish farms, its two biggest sources of income.
"Iloilo is prone to natural disasters, to floods and landslides during typhoons and to droughts during the dry season and these are causing immense sufferings on our people," Tupas said.
