Gravity bomb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A gravity bomb is an aircraft-delivered bomb that does not contain a guidance system and hence follows a ballistic trajectory.
Dumb bomb was used for a time, but many in military circles felt it sounded too trite, and eventually 'gravity bomb' gained currency.
Special types of gravity bombs include retarded gravity bombs, which use a mechanical method of creating increased drag, such as a parachute, ballute or drag-inducing petals.

An inertial fuze, used on retarded bombs, that is armed by the jerk caused by the deployment of brake fins or a ballute.
The bombs breached the Moehne and Eder dams.
Although in their standard configuration these bombs are fitted with a "slick" tail with four fins, a popout-fin tail is often fitted to the 340 kilogram M-117, in which form it is referred to as the "Retarder", and the 225 kilogram Mark 82, making it a "Snakeye".

cluster bomb - bomb consisting of a canister that is dropped from a plane and that opens to release a cluster of bomblets (usually fragmentation bombs) over a wide area; "cluster bombs cannot be targeted precisely"

In most wars of the past, bombs were just dropped from aircraft in large numbers, in a ‘spray and pray’ fashion, in hopes that one or more of the groups of explosives would destroy the intended target.
By tilting the fins in a specific direction, there is an increase in drag on the side of the bomb that the fin(s) turn towards, which in turn causes the bomb to move in the direction of the side with increased drag.
One of the reasons why smart bombs were developed was because of the civilian and other neutral casualties that occured as a result of massive bombings; a reoccurance of these casualties is never a way to win the war with people’s confidence.

 Could Smart Bombs Go Dumb?
Smart bombs might be self-propelled, in the form of cruise missiles or ballistic missiles.
And the one problem with smart bombs, as employed in recent years, is that a near-miss is as good as a mile -- in fact, a near-miss by a live warhead can cause catastrophic collateral damage.
Every smart bomb uses software and sensors to be told about its target, and then to find that target precisely during the final part of its flight.

 Howstuffworks "How Smart Bombs Work"
A "dumb bomb" is a bomb with only these elements, dropped from an airplane (such as the B-2 bomber).
Smart bombs generally have proximity fuzes, which set off the explosive just before the bomb reaches the target, or impact fuzes, which set off the explosive when the bomb actually hits something.
For the bomb to see its target, a separate human operator, either on the ground or in the air, has to "paint" the designated target with a high-intensity laser beam.

Comparing the bomb's position to that of the laser spot (and target), a microprocessor adjusts the weapon's descent by moving the tiny wings on the bomb's nose.
By delaying the explosion of the bomb until it has passed through the walls of a cave or bunker, its destructive power is concentrated on the contents of the target--usually personnel or equipment inside the structure.
The circular error probability of a typical Vietnam-era dumb bomb was 150 feet; half the time it was dropped, the bomb hit within a 300 foot-wide circle.

Mark 82 bomb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mark 82 (Mk 82) is an unguided, low-drag general-purpose bomb (dumb bomb), part of the U.S. Mark 80 series.
With a nominal weight of 500 lb (227 kg), it is the smallest of those bombs in current service, and one of the most common air-dropped weapons in the world.
The Mk 82 is the warhead for the GBU-12 and GBU-22 laser-guided bombs and for the GBU-38 JDAM.

An estimate of a continually-slowing bombing rate was used to extrapolate munitions-expended for an additional 6 days, and the 22,000 precision-munition number was the result (on that last day, the Pentagon reported that 200 precision munitions had been expended in the last 24 hours).
What that indicates is that the larger bombs expended were more frequently smart, and the dumb bombs used tended to be smaller.

About 90 percent of the bombs dropped during the war were 1,000- and 2,000-pound unguided munitions, which, on average, fell only within 200 feet of their intended targets.
The guidance kits could be attached to hundreds of thousands of dumb bombs the military had been stockpiling since the 1950s.
If the companies would agree to build as many bombs as the military wanted for no more than $40,000 apiece with a 20-year warranty, they would not have to reveal their costs, could choose their own suppliers, and the winner would be the sole JDAM supplier in perpetuity.

A bomb is a purely ballistic weapon, meaning that the only force that acts upon it after it is released from an aircraft is gravity.
A number of different types of dumb bombs have been developed from World War I until today, and they are typically classified by their weight.
In summary, what separates a bomb from a rocket from a missile is whether or not the weapon has a propulsion system of some kind or some form of guidance allowing it to steer towards a particular target.

An unguided 1000lb general-purpose bomb is sometimes referred to as a 'dumb' bomb and is fitted with either a ballistic or a retard tail.
In impact mode, the bomb is detonated as it reaches the target, which optimises the weapon's blast effects against unprotected installations.

Smart bombs increase the frequency with which targets are hit, which in turn reduces the number of sorties that need to be flown.
In one case, bombs were fired at an enemy target in the dark, just a few hundred metres away from friendly troops, destroying the enemy position.
The bombs are fitted with a GPS receiver, a computer, an inertial guidance and control system, tail fins and a harness to strap it to the under wing of an aircraft, such as the US Navy's F/A-18 Hornet.

 JDAM Matures Part 1
An inertially guided bomb presented the prospect of a robust, digitally programmable, highly reproducable weapon which was jam proof and wholly oblivious to ambient weather conditions.
The principal errors in bomb delivery are then dominated by the accuracy of the synthetic aperture radar or thermal imager/laser rangefinder used to produce target coordinates, and the guidance loop error in the bomb.
Laser guided bombs such as the baseline GBU-10/12 and GBU-22/24 are unusable under conditions where the laser illumination is impaired, conditions which are of no consequence to a JDAM tracking L-band microwave emissions from low orbiting satellites.

For example, building and handling such dirty radioactive bombs is a risky venture for the wannabe terrorists who might get fried by radiation before they deliver their payload.
In a telephone interview, James Muckerheide, president of Radiation, Science and Health, Inc., and Massachusetts state nuclear engineer compares the dirty radioactive bomb concept with the results of the very wide dispersal of a huge amount of radioactivity from the disastrous accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power reactor in the former Soviet Union.

A fire bomb is a thin skinned container of fuel gel designed for use against dug-in troops, supply installations, wooden structures, and land convoys.
The MK77 familiy is an evolution of the incendiary bombs M-47 and M-74, used during the conflict in Korea and the war in Vietnam.
The denial by the US DOD was issued on the technical basis that the incendiaries used consisted primarily of kerosene-based jet fuel (which has a smaller concentration of benzene), rather than the traditional mixture of gasoline and benzene used for napalm, and that these therefore did not qualify as napalm.
