Dumbarton (Dùn Breatainn in Scottish Gaelic) is a burgh in Scotland, lying on the north bank of the River Clyde where the River Leven flows into the Clyde estuary.
Dumbarton functioned as the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde, and later as the county town of the county of Dunbartonshire (formerly known as "Dumbartonshire").
Dumbarton is the birthplace of David Byrne from Talking Heads, Chris Greer and of the motor-racing driver Jackie Stewart.

At the period of their formation there were a number of other clubs playing in the town of Dumbarton and surrounding areas, but they have survived as the sole 'senior' club in the area (although the 'junior' sides of Vale of Leven and Clydebank play not too far away).
The club plays in Gold and Black strips (uniforms) and is nicknamed the Sons (as in Sons of the Rock, a term for those born in the town of Dumbarton, the rock being the extinct volcano the town's castle sits on).

The name Dumbarton comes from "Dun Breatann" meaning the fortress of the Britons for it was the Ancient Britons who first recognized the strategic potential of the basalt rock which stood 254 ft in height and commanded such magnificent views over the surrounding territory.
In 1668 Glasgow merchants who were jealous of Greenock's harbour business suggested to Dumbarton that it become the port for Glasgow but the magistrates of Dumbarton thought that this would raise the cost of living for their inhabitants and declined the offer.
Dumbarton was also famous for building ships, best known of the shipbuilders probably William Denny and Brothers and the most famous of their ships being the Cutty Sark, the famous tea clipper.
