Dumbledore does not give importance to the so-called "purity of blood" and believes that an individual's choices reflect his character rather than his birth, blood, or family, saying "it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be." Dumbledore knew he needed to be at Hogwarts and not the ministry, that Hagrid was innocent, that Sirius was equipped to handle Azkaban and so much more.

Snape & Dumbledore - The Sugar Quill
Both Dumbledore and Voldemort are powerful, brilliant men and capable leaders, who know how to read the emotions of their followers reasonably well, provide structure, belonging, and a cause to their followers.
Dumbledore offers something greater, he offers Snape a chance to redeem himself, and to prove that he deserves better than the loathing and derision of his peers.
Which could prove invaluable Dumbledore, who is planning out the large-scale defense of the wizarding world and may not thoroughly think through the details of his plans.

 Weird Words: Dumbledore
Its first part is one of a set of rhyming words from English of some centuries ago, the others being bumble (from a root meaning to drone or buzz) and humble (from an old Germanic word meaning to hum).
To some extent all imitate the insect’s buzz; the final dore of dumbledore is an Old English word for any insect that flies with a loud humming noise.
Moreover, it has sometimes been applied in English dialect to a far less pleasant insect, the cockchafer (also called the May bug), a considerable pest of crops; it’s a large beetle that flies very haphazardly with a loud buzzing sound.

Dumbledore, as his wizard card tells us, 'is particularly famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945'.Defeating a Dark Lord, is no child's play, so Dumbledore must be an accomplished fighter.
It is possible, even likely, that Dumbledore has a larger plan for the defeat of Voldemort. That design could very well call for a one-ON-one duel between himself and the Dark Lord, as a prelude[or post-lude] to a final conflict between Voldemort and Harry.

I've always seen Dumbledore as a "calming to the storm" in Harry's life, and Harris seemed to play Dumbledore as though he had a genuine caring for Harry.
He couldn't be both Gandalf AND Dumbledore, no matter how gifted of an actor he is. (I must admit, however that I thought he should have been the replacement for Harris.) On that subject, Harris was an INCREDIBLE DD in the first 2 movies.

A plot twist is one thing, but to throw away a character's being to start a new one with the same name is not a plot twist.
This may, however, stem from the fact that Dumbledore knows more about this than Voldemort, and that there will be bad side effects from his use of Harry's blood.
I think he knows a lot more about why Harry is so special (aside from being the boy who lived) and he (Dumbledore) knows that Harry has to have certain challenges and experiences to develop his full potential.

Contrary to rampant tabloid reports over the past several days claiming the current Gandalf portrayer would pull double wizard duty as Hogwarts' Professor Albus Dumbledore, E! Online has learned that another acclaimed British thespian has in fact been tapped for the role vacated by the death of Richard Harris.
But McKellen never seriously considered the role (he's already done the franchise thing with The Lord of the Rings and X-Men) and producers ultimately went with Gambon, a classically trained actor who studied with Laurence Olivier and whose credits include Gosford Park, The Insider and the lead in the British miniseries The Singing Detective.
Although the exact terms of Gambon's deal are not known, he'll presumably play Dumbledore in the remaining Potter films.
