Dumbleyung, which became a townsite in 1906, is surrounded by a rural district dominated by wheat farming.
Lake Dumbleyung is a wildlife sanctuary fed by the Coblinine River, and is one of the largest inland salt lakes in Western Australia.
In the 1870's one of the first homesteads to be built in the Dumbleyung area was on the property known as Wheatfields, constructed from native timber and materials.

Dumbleyung (33°19′S 117°44′E; post code: 6350) is a town and shire in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 270km south-east of Perth between Wagin and Lake Grace on State Route 107.
However, in 1907, Dumbleyung was gazetted as a townsite and became the terminus of a railway from Wagin.
The nearby Dumbleyung Lake is a well-known attraction.

Grazing leases were granted in the area in 1875 when the area around Lake Dumbleyung was reported as being rich and fertile.
As Dumbleyung was on the route to the goldfields, some enterprising farmers would load their wagons with supplies and take them out the goldfields and auction the contents.

In November 2000, the watertable was within 4 m of the surface at monitoring sites near the eastern and south-eastern edges of the Dumbleyung townsite, but was less than 2 m deep at only two of the monitored locations.
The groundwater pumping test in Dumbleyung showed that at the site tested, only a small volume of water could be accessed by the production bore since the water level in it quickly dropped nearly 20 m, even though it was pumped at a low rate (only 0.4 L/second, or about 35 m3/day).
Develop a surface water management plan which prevents the accumulation of surface water in the south-eastern part of the townsite where the flow of the Bateup's Creek is impeded.

Dumbleyung has a District Health Care Centre with visiting Doctor every second Wednesday from 1.00pm to 5.00pm, phone the doctor's surgery in Wagin (9861 1633) for appointments.
In addition Dumbleyung has a roadhouse, art shop, hairdresser, rural merchandise store, machinery dealership, engineering works, landcare office and hopefully a day care centre will be operating soon.
Dumbleyung has a tavern providing counter meals, Tuesday to Thursday between 6.00pm and 8.00pm and Friday to Sunday between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

Experiments were designed to evaluate performance of susceptible wheat cvs in RLN infested soils under the influence of a nematicide (Temik) used as an experimental tool.
In half of the plots, Temik was applied (20 kg/ha at Doodlakine and Dumbleyung and 30 kg/ha at Mukinbudin) at seeding, banded with fertiliser, 2 to 3 cm below seed.
The root infestation levels at Dumbleyung were closer to that at Doodlakine and it seems reasonable to expect similar level of crop damage and yield loss at these locations.

It was a fabulous experience, and made even better for the Japanese by spotting their first wild kangaroos on the way home.
An ice-cream stop in Lake Grace before the Rovers then convereged on the Dumbleyung Yacht Club to join in with the Sailing Regatta that was on the same weekend.
It was a marvellous evening – making balloon animals for the local children, whip cracking, dancing to the band and enjoying local lamb for dinner.
