Dumbleyung Lake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coordinates: 33°20′00″S, 117°39′00″E Dumbleyung Lake, also widely known as Lake Dumbleyung, is a salt lake in Western Australia.
The explorers Henry Landor and Henry Maxwell Lefroy are usually credited with the discovery of Dumbleyung Lake, although it appears to have been shown on a map in 1839 with the name Kondening Lake.
Dumbleyung Lake received world recognition when Donald Campbell broke the world water speed record on it on 31 December 1964, travelling at 444.66 km/h (276.3 mph) in his boat Bluebird K7.

 Dumbleyung
Dumbleyung, which became a townsite in 1906, is surrounded by a rural district dominated by wheat farming.
Lake Dumbleyung is a wildlife sanctuary fed by the Coblinine River, and is one of the largest inland salt lakes in Western Australia.
In the 1870's one of the first homesteads to be built in the Dumbleyung area was on the property known as Wheatfields, constructed from native timber and materials.

Department of Agriculture, Western Australia : Dumbleyung community bores summary
This brief report summarises the sources of groundwater problems and approaches to managing the problems in the Dumbleyung townsite, and then suggests specific steps which can be taken.
The groundwater pumping test in Dumbleyung showed that at the site tested, only a small volume of water could be accessed by the production bore since the water level in it quickly dropped nearly 20 m, even though it was pumped at a low rate (only 0.4 L/second, or about 35 m3/day).
There are opportunities to reduce the groundwater recharge occurring within Dumbleyung, and therefore reduce the risk of salinity.

Lake Dumbleyung is at the end of Karen Ward's property, and she's happy to bring the world up-to-date.
Karen, however, certainly knows her lake history: "They had the Lake Dumbleyung Turf Club in 1908; the first inland sailing club was in 1918 and then it was sort of formed again in 1967.
Now that Lake Dumbleyung's got water back in it, maybe it can even have a claim to fame as a place to ski, paddle, yacht or picnic - rather than as a former lake.

 Dumbleyung, Western Australia - Travelmate
But it was at Lake Dumbleyung, just outside town – the largest permanent stretch of natural water in WA and an important wildlife sanctuary – that, in December, 1964, the ill-fated Donald Campbell set the world water speed record of 276.3 mph (444.66km/h).
On Pussy Cat Hill, on the shores of the lake, there’s a memorial to Campbell, who was killed on Coniston Water at Lancashire in England on January 4, 1967, when his boat broke up while travelling in excess of 480km/h.
Unfortunately, Lake Dumbleyung suffers terribly from salinity these days – a problem for much of this part of WA’s wheatbelt - and can be a forlorn looking place with a horrible saline odour.
