  DVD Review - Dumbo
For 60 years now, "Dumbo" has been a family favorite among all the animated Disney movies and it is immediately understandable, why that is. The charm, the sweetness and the emotions that permeate the film are stronger than in any other one, and what’s more important they ring so very true.
But with her support Dumbo uses this newfound knowledge and soon becomes the celebrated star of the show and with the help of his friend, Timothy the mouse, Dumbo manages to break the shackles of his life and even make it to Hollywood.
The fullscreen presentation of "Dumbo" on this DVD is certainly pleasant, but not quite as striking as the recently restored version "Snow White." The print is mostly free of defects and blemishes but there is quite a bit of grain evident in the picture as a result of its considerable age.

Dumbo, 60th Anniversary DVD (2001): Edward Brophy, Cliff Edwards, Sterling Holloway, Herman Bin - PopMatters Film Review
The animated film remains a deeply moving picture and conveys various universal themes -- the fear of being separated from one's mother, facing discrimination on the basis of physical appearance -- with a simple eloquence that is neither preachy nor trite.
Dumbo was released roughly six weeks before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Key among these is Dumbo's mother (voiced by Sarah Selby), separated from her son throughout much of the film, just as America was cut off from Great Britain and other allies at the time of Dumbo's release.

The dumbo rat mutation and human analogues
The dumbo mutation appeared first in the pet trade, and as of this writing the scientific community appears to be unaware of this interesting mutation in domestic rats.
The dumbo rat's malformed and malpositioned ears, possible small jaw, possible differences in eye shape and position, and possible underdevelopment of the muscles that move the ears or the nerves that control them, are all strongly suggestive of a first and second pharyngeal arch disorder.
Dumbo rats may turn out to be a potential animal model for first and second pharyngeal arch disorders in humans.

 Dumbo - Don Markstein's Toonopedia
Dumbo was immediately hailed as a classic, embraced by critics and audiences alike — in contrast to earlier features such as Fantasia, which got favorable reviews but took almost 30 years to make back its costs, or The Reluctant Dragon, which neither the critics nor the public seem to have cared for very much.
None of the voice actors in Dumbo received screen credit; but Timothy Mouse (who befriended Dumbo even in his darkest days and was instrumental in helping him find greatness within himself) was voiced by Edward Brophy, who has no other known voice credits or other toon connection.
Jumbo (Dumbo's mother, whose love for him never wavered even when she was judged a mad elephant and imprisoned for it) was Verna Felton, who also played the Fairy Godmother in Disney's Cinderella and one of the good fairies in Sleeping Beauty.

'Dumbo' - Disney classic soars onto DVD - Zap2it
Produced in the aftermath of the wildly experimental "Fantasia," "Dumbo" is deceptively simple -- In only 64 minutes, it tells the story of a baby elephant ostracized for his larger-than-normal ears, who learns to embrace the things that make him different and to literally soar.
There are two period Disney shorts appropriately tied to "Dumbo." In "Elmer Elephant," the title character has to overcome self-consciousness about his nose to woo a cute tiger and find his true purpose.
The 15-minute "Celebrating Dumbo" featurette emphasizes the speed with which the film was developed, animated and executed, a relief after the arduous process behind "Fantasia." Much is also made of its atypical length, with Roy Disney providing the perfect analysis, declaring, "I doesn't want to be any longer than 60 minutes."
