  George Aiken - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aiken was born in Dummerston in Windham County, Vermont, and graduated from Brattleboro High School in Putney, Vermont in 1909.
A Republican, he was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives in 1931 and served as Speaker of the House from 1933 to 1935.
He was lieutenant governor of Vermont from 1935 to 1937 and subsequently served two terms as governor, being first elected in 1936 and re-elected in 1938.

Dummerston was granted for the first time on the same day as Brattleboro and Putney.
The name Dummerston was adopted very early, and used almost exclusively for the town.
However, it had apparently never been changed officially, so the 1937 Vermont legislature made legal confirmation of the fact that the town's name was, and had been, Dummerston for over 150 years.

The Vermont was launched on August 31, 1905 sponsored by Miss Jennie Bell, the daughter of Governor Charles J. Bell of Vermont, and commissioned at the Boston Navy Yard on March 4, 1907 with Captain William P. Potter in command.
After her shakedown cruise off the eastern seaboard between Boston, Massachusetts, and Hampton Roads, Virginia, Vermont participated in maneuvers with the 1st Division of the Atlantic Fleet and, later, with the 1st and Second Squadrons.
Vermont was decided in 1999 by the Supreme Court of the state of Vermont.

Naulakha, the home built for Rudyard Kipling in Dummerston, Vermont, is one of the finer examples of the Shingle style in the state.
Vermont had many private estates during this period; Naulakha is one of the few remaining and one of the best preserved from this pre-Colonial Revival period.
When the Kiplings decided to build on their 11 acres in Dummerston, Beatty Balestier, Caroline Kipling's brother, was hired as supervisor of the construction, Beatty was locally known as a spendthrift, always in debt, party-going, and a heavy drinker.

The Vermont sheriff's department had been investigating several larcenies from motor vehicles in the Putney, Vermont and Dummerston, Vermont area in which credit and debit cards and other items were stolen.

Last year's camp concluded with a rally and civil disobedience action at the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor; 21 people were arrested.

The material came from the storerooms, attics, and basements of the Brattleboro Retreat, one of the ten oldest mental hospitals in the country, originally founded as the Vermont Asylum for the Insane in 1834.
In 1893 the name was changed to the Brattleboro Retreat when the official state- sanctioned hospital opened in Waterbury.
Today the retreat exists on large well-kept campus-like grounds, but the population has dropped off dramatically since the early 1970's when Vermont stopped sending patients there who were under state care.
