Dummy reversal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dummy reversal (also known as reverse dummy) is a technique in the card game of contract bridge, when the declarer uses trump cards to ruff from the hand with longer trumps, and retains the trumps in the other hand to draw the opponents' remaining trumps.
Since, by rules, the declarer becomes the player which first mentions the trump suit in the bidding, usually the hand with long trumps will be declarer's one – thus the name "reverse dummy", as the normal roles of dummy's and declarer's trumps are reversed.
In strict sense, dummy reversal can be called that only if it yields more tricks than the normal technique.

 Another Dummy Reversal
The classic dummy reversal involves ruffing out one of dummy's suits in the long trump hand, using the short hand to draw the opponents' trump after the final ruff has been effected.
I prefer that definition because this type of hand is about 10 or 20 times as common as those of the classic dummy reversal and there are a number of players who simply can't break away from the habit of counting out tricks -- more specifically losers -- from the closed hand.
The king of spades drew the ace, and now a diamond lead was rightly ruffed high, the jack of hearts drew the ace and the queen of clubs was won with the ace in dummy.

The main principle of the dummy reversal is this: Ruffs in the long hand do not start to gain tricks until the long hand _becomes_ the short hand.
Since the dummy reversal is simply a case of the ruffing game, except that it uses the long hand for ruffs, we won't say much more about it here.
It is the deliberate shortening of one's trump length _relative to an opponent's length_.

Dummy has either zero or one heart because with two, he would prefer the major suit contract.
This type of misfit is characterized by a mere preference taken by the dummy in a part-score contract.
When your partner has made the opening lead showing a strong holding in a suit that the dummy has a singleton or void, you must lead trump as soon as you get in, to avoid your partner's loss of his tricks by the dummy's ruffs.

And then another happy thought occurred to me, namely that this could easily be played as a dummy reversal.
Now we have to get back to dummy and it only remains that West isn't looking at a singleton heart, for we know he's the only one with trump left, and if he can ruff the third round, we have the tenace over him.
Now when the short hand is the closed one, playing as above wouldn't be a dummy reversal, of course, but an attempt to make the closed hand good.

My vision was to trump two clubs in dummy, draw trumps (assuming they broke 3-2) and claim the rest (the last club in my hand being discarded on the long heart).
Here it would require trumping two small diamonds in dummy with the Ace and King of trumps, drawing trumps and claiming the rest of the tricks.
This was a better vision because, instead of requiring a 3-2 spade break, it only required a 4-3 or 5-2 diamond break together with a 4-1 or 3-2 spade break.

These cards are from then on played by the declarer, who tells the dummy which card is to be played whenever it is the dummy's turn to play on a trick.
Generally speaking, if they hold an even number of cards, they are unlikely to be exactly divided; if the opponents have an odd number in the suit, the cards will probably be divided as evenly as possible.
For example, if declarer and dummy have eight trumps between them, the opponents' trumps are probably (70% chance) divided 3-2 (one opponent with three trumps, the other with two) and trumps can be drawn in three rounds.

This type of play is called "dummy reversal" because declarer reverses the usual procedure of ruffing losers in dummy and instead ruffs dummy's losers in his hand.
If you don't lead the ten of hearts and instead play the A-K of clubs, planning next to ruff a low club in dummy, North can defeat you by trumping the third club, leading the heart jack to his partner's ace and trumping a club return by South.

In Board 1 of the Swiss Match, an improvement is to draw trumps without discarding a heart from dummy; continue with ace, king and another heart; ruff the third heart if East follows, discard (aiming at a double squeeze with spade the bilaterally-guarded suit) if he doesn't.
