500 DUNAM ON THE MOON // Story
Ayn Hawd al-Jadida, the unrecognized village nestled in the heart of the forest planted by the JNF, was all but forgotten.
Inspired by “Facing the Forests,” 500 DUNAM on the M00N inverts Yehoshua’s story (no more severed tongue) to document the art of dispossession and the creativity of the dispossessed.

Dunam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dunam or dönüm, dunum, donum is a unit of area used in the Ottoman Empire and still used, in various standardized versions, in many countries formerly part of the Ottoman Empire.
Before the end of the Ottoman Empire, the size of a dönüm was 919.3 square meters, but during the British Mandate of Palestine the metric dunam of 1,000 m² was adopted, and this is still used.
Other countries using a dunam of some size include Libya, Syria and the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

PASSIA ROUND TABLE - THE LAND QUESTION after 1948, Dr. Michal Oren
Although it is always difficult to persuade people to relinquish their private property for the public good, it was seven times harder to persuade the Arab population who interpreted this as a 'Land Policy of Nation' and was in disagreement with the cultural bias of the regime.
A clear example is the case of 2,000 dunam that were expropriated in 1961 from Arabs living in Sachnin and Arabe for the 'national project' of a water conduit.
It was even more difficult for the Arabs to grasp the expropriation of 1,200 dunam for the establishment of the city of Upper Nazareth, or 5,500 dunam for the city of Carmiel, since this land was taken not for the use of all citizens but for one sector exclusively - the Jewish one.

_500 Dunam on the Moon_: Ein Hod/Ayn Hawd
Jones's directorial debut, "500 Dunam on the Moon," is showing Tuesday and Wednesday nights as part of the 13th Annual Human Rights Watch International Film Festival at the Walter Reade Theater, which runs through June 27.
For this reason the village has no electricity or connecting road, and until a terrible fire broke out in October 1998 it was literally hidden from view by the looming cypresses planted as part of Israel's mass forestation project.
Jones said it was the fire of October 1998 - shown in newsreel clips - that finally compelled her to tell the tale of Ein Hod and the two Ayn Hawds, after the blaze burned away the forest and exposed the new Ayn Hawd and the past that it represents....

The second period, from approximately 1975-1982 until the present, is the period of "territory for peace", territory for votes at the polling booth, over-generous giving away of national resources, and increasing disdain for the connection between territories and the past: a period of "one dunam and then one less".

Fifteen minutes later, Mouasi excitedly lifted a sledgehammer and pounded a metal stake into the ground, marking the first plot surveyed and officially transfered to the Baka al-Garbiyeh farmers.
The land grants in Baka al-Garbiyeh are occurring in tandem with a larger transfer of 11,400 dunams to Arab municipalities in the Wadi Ara district, representing the first successful negotiations between the ILA and non-governmental land rights groups.
The farmers' victory is bittersweet since much of the land being returned to them was originally appropriated by the state in 1948, but the two transfers mark the beginning of a shift toward negotiating rather than ignoring land issues.
