DUNCAN FORBES, OF CULLODEN (1685-1747), Scottish statesman, was born at Bunchrew or at Culloden near Inverness on the 10th of November 1685.
In 1722 Forbes was returned member for Inverness, and in 1725 he succeeded Dundas of Arniston as lord advocate.
Forbes was a patriot without ostentation or pretence, a true Scotsman with no narrow prejudice, an accomplished and even erudite scholar without pedantry, a man of genuine piety without asceticism or intolerance.

Duncan Forbes (1644 - 1704) was a Scottish politician, and supporter of the House of Hanover.
In recognition of the fact his support of the crown had led to severe harassment by supporters of James Stuart he was granted special dispensation to distil whisky without being taxed.
The Forbes lived in Culloden, near the site of the Battle of Culloden, and Forbes was directly protecting his estate.

As lord advocate of Scotland (1725-37) and lord president of the court of session (1737-47), his influence and diplomacy did much to consolidate the union of England and Scotland, but his plan to create royal highland regiments to prevent clan uprisings was not adopted until 1739 when the famous regiment, the Black Watch, was founded.
He actively opposed the Jacobite rebels in 1715 and 1745 and urged lenient treatment in pacifying the country after the defeat and massacre of the rebels at the battle of Culloden Moor (1746).
